Geocache Description:

Welcome to Pioneer Cemetery.

Established in 1827 in Huntsburg Township, this cemetery sits on the far eastern side of Geauga County. This is a very historic place with many older gravestones. Unfortunately, the land on which this cemetery was built seems to be a little unstable and prone to hold moisture, and many of the stones and monuments have fallen.

Although the name "Huntsburg" is attributed to early settler and landowner, Eben Hunt, there was another Hunt that settled in this area and contributed even more to what is now Geauga County. Lewis Hunt was a knowledgeable horticulturist who moved from Massachusetts to Ohio in the early 1800's. Prior to his arrival, the earliest settlers in this area had begun holding annual gatherings during the summer that were known as "jollifications". These "jollifications" or fairs, as they became known, continued informally for more than 20 years. In 1823 Lewis Hunt and several other prominent farmers and landowners helped to formally organize this annual event, marking the official beginning of the Geauga County Fair.

The early fairs alternated between Chardon and Burton, until the County Fairgrounds were built in the mid-1800's, and Burton became the permanent home of the fair, which has been held every year since 1823, entertaining and amusing some quarter million people of all ages on an annual basis. Today it is known as the Great Geauga County Fair to denote that it is the oldest county fair in the state of Ohio. Please pay your respects to Lewis Hunt while you are here. Geauga County just wouldn't have been the same without him!

Cemetery hours are from dawn to dusk. Absolutely no night caching is allowed! Please be respectful of all who rest here. There is a small parking spot at the edge of the cemetery off of Pioneer Road that is only large enough to fit a single car. The cache is a camouflaged 35mm film can with no room for trade items. Please bring your own pen or pencil and be sure to replace the cache exactly as you found it.

This cache is one of six in a series that you will need to find to determine the final coordinates of "70's One-Hit Wonders: Have a Nice Day!" Each of these six caches contains a set of lyrics from a song that was made popular by a one-hit wonder group or solo artist in the 1970's. All of the lyric clues can be found in the log sheets. Using this small section of the song, you must determine the song title and ultimately the year that the song reached its highest position on Billboard magazine's Top 40 list. The last digit of that year will be the number you seek to gain the final cache's coordinates.

Although some of the songs may have been remade by contemporary artists, each song was originally made popular in the 1970's, and the year of its popularity is what you must find. Please do not give away any of the lyrics, song titles, or years in your logs or they may be deleted! However, if you had a favorite song by a one-hit wonder of the 1970's, or just a favorite 1970's song in general, please feel free to mention it in your find log.

All of these caches were placed in October of 2006, to commemorate the year of Geauga County's bicentennial. I hope you enjoy your caching journey through the beautiful and historic Geauga County. Watch for the special bicentennial banners as you make your way between cache locations. If you find all of the caches in the series, including the final, you will have visited at least six of the sixteen townships in Geauga County, including a trip through Middlefield Village.

Note that some of the hints for these caches are actually song titles from 70's one-hit wonders, along with their year of popularity. These hints will not help you solve the lyrics or the puzzle to determine the final cache location, but hopefully they will help you find the cache at hand if you're having difficulty.
