St Swithun - Cheswardine
This cache is one of a series set at or near churches in the lovely surroundings of the Shropshire countryside.
We’d like to thank The Washers for conceiving the idea, initiating the series and inviting other cachers to add to it.
St Swithum is in the beautiful village of Cheswardine. At the time of the Domesday Book, Cheswardine was in the Bradford hundreds of Staffordshire (even thought it's actually in Shropshire). It was suggested the village name means "cheese farm".
The old medieval chuch on the site was falling into repair in the 18th century and was replaced by an ugly building in 1808. This was then demolished in 1887 and replaced by the present church. The tower survived all the work on the church in the period and was built around 1470. If you look closely at the tower you will see a lion on the south-east buttress and a dragon on the north.

The cache is situated in some lovely woods accessed by a Public Footpath leading from near the church. We'd suggest parking by the church and walking up from there.
