Current Goal

Please help this coin make its way to the United Kingdom and the 488th Intelligence Squadron, Mildenhall, U.K. While in the United Kingdom, also help the coin travel to some of the areas where bat education and protection groups are located: London, Staffordshire, South Lancaster, Sussex, Durham, Kent, Cheshire, Norfolk and Cornwall.

This travel bug is being tracked by hundreds of teachers, students and librarians. The bug's locations, cultures and people it meets will be used to teach children and adults about bats, geography and other peoples!

Please keep in touch and let all of us know about Marisol’s new friends and locations.

Thank you so very much for being part of this learning experience!

About This Item

Congratulations! You have found one of the California Native Bat Conservancy’s travel bugs. We are a not-for-profit, all volunteer, bat conservation, education and rescue group.

This is a crew coin from the 488th Intelligence Squadron, Mildenhall, U.K. What do bats and this coin have in common? They weigh the same! Ninety percent of the over 1,000 species of bats worldwide weigh the same or less as this coin! Bat’s aren’t huge animals that swoop after you – approximately 70% eat insects and 23% eat fruit.

Plus, there is a bat stamped on the coin above the squadron’s motto, “By day or by night.” Bats see as well or better than we do. They use echolocation, much like the 488th’s radar to detect danger – and in the bat’s case…food!
