This geocoin was released in July 2005 at the "In Flanders Fields Event" near Ypres, Belgium.
The event took place on one of the battlefields of world war 1.
The aim of this coin is to travel the world, and spread a message of peace. |
Otto Dix was a german soldier who fought in Flanders Fields at the end of World War 1 as a machine-gunner and platoon leader. Het took part in the battles near the little village of Mesen, close to the border between France and Belgium.
When he returned to Germany at the end of the war, he became one of the most respected german artists. His expressionist paintings clearly show his aversion to war.
In the years before the second world war, he was considered a threat to the german morale and a lot of his paintings were taken from musea and destroyed.
