Wahoo! Find #100! And on the anniversary of our first find, which thought was cool (although we wish we'd been able to do a lot more than 100 by now!)
The walk to part 2 of A Most Glorious, Epic & Triumphant Return of Cody was so easy this time. It still was cool enough out, although it was getting warmer as we took our time at the cache trading and logging our find. We took a bunch of pictures, and I pointed out to Julian and Ryder where our house is as we could see it from the cache site. We made our trades and left an unactivated Screw Geocoins! geocoin for whomever gets to it first. We also dropped the CITO geocoin here to be moved along.
By now Julian's muddy bottom half was drying up as were my feet. Once we got back under tree cover the hike back was even easier and sooooo satisfying. We are so proud of ourselves for our accomplishments -- both today and over the course of the last year that we've been doing this great activity. [I actually will be posting my thoughts on our first year later on or tomorrow, as there are so many things I feel I want to say about it.] We bushwacked the last bit in order to avoid the mud pools and made our way back home where Julian probably had the best shower of his life. (He's next to me reading this as I type and he started laughing and proclaimed, "That's true!" He's still giggling. 🙂)
Overall, a GREAT day and the end of a GREAT year! I have a feeling this next one will be even better! #200, watch out!

Bear Paughs retrieved it from Binghamton Like You've Never Seen it Before!

So we got an early start this morning to try to get #99 and #100. We went after Binghamton Like You've Never Seen it Before! first. This time we went the wittman dam way and it was a much easier hike than starting from the quarry. Other than some mud near the beginning (Julian fell in and was just encrusted in mud up to his waist, poor thing!) it was a nice hike. We took our time and it was still cool out since we got such and early start. We took a bunch of snack breaks along the way (which is how I bribed Ryder into trying it with us.)
We made it to the site and found the cache quickly. Ryder gets credit for finding the cache, although I may have pointed him in the direction to look. We took lots of pictures (which I will hopefully get loaded sometime soon -- I'm so far behind in uploading my pics!)
This was very exciting for us, we were closing in on number 100, and we weren't dying from heat exhaustion. From this cache we pressed onward and upward, off to part 2 of The Most Glorious....Return of Cody.

I was very dismayed to wake up to rain this morning. It completely ruined our plans for caches #99 and #100 today. Hopefully it will not rain overnight and we'll try it again tomorrow.
So later in the day we decided to try a cache anyway. We go to M-E High School everynight to walk and run around the track and then play football with Julian and Ryder. When I realized where De Myster Santhanas was I made a note we have to try it soon, since we are there at least five nights a week. So we went for it tonight.
Finding the cache was easy enough, once I got reception under the heavy tree cover. Actually, I went more by instinct than by the readings from my GPSr. I saw what I thought would be a great place, and sure enough it was there. Then we had to solve the puzzle part of it. I figured it was a no-brainer, I mean, given the theme of the cache and all. But the combination wouldn't work. I even tried it with 9's just in case it was set upside down for some reason. Then 000, 123, and a bunch of others. But I still think I was right the first time. But I couldn't get it to budge.
When we got back to the track where Steve had just finished his run, the boys started their football drills with Dad while I looked at the information on my PDA. Reading past logs, it seems the combination has not always worked for finders past. I was highly frustrated at not being able to open the cache. Even more so when I noticed someone else posted a found it log today!
Oh well. I'll try it again in a couple days, especially since I know where to find it. Won't be going to the track tomorrow night, as Steve and I will be at Montage Mountain to see the Dave Matthews Band. Maybe we'll luck out and get 99 and 100 tomorrow morning with the caches we originally planned to.

Our final find of the day was T.O.W. This is one of our all-time favorites. Seriously, our favorite micro. This is how it should be done. After so many less than inspired caches it seems we've done lately, this one was terrific. We even created a new bookmark category for it -- "Kids Love This Cache!" We got a bunch of pictures and a thousand giggles out of it.
After T.O.W. we decided to try Seven Seals of Silence again, again with no luck. Where are we not looking? We spent a lot of time on it, but we'll have to try again. Third time's the charm so they say.
If my calculations are on, we're at 98 finds. We're trying to plan to hit 99 and 100 on two particular caches tomorrow, on our one year anniversary!

So onto the third cache for the day. West Side Cadet was out in the open and in really bad shape. There was about four inches of water inside. At least the park was nice, and the armory itself was cool to check out. I hadn't ever been over there before, and I grew up in Endwell!

Bear Paughs retrieved it from Huh???

Huh? was our second attempt of the day, after This and That. We came up empty at This and That, because mall security was a bit overzealous in their monitoring of our activities. This was after I had a conversation with the guy and he wished us luck and everything. It creeped me out being watched like that, so we gave up and went after Huh?
There were some wet spots on the way to the cache. I was wearing my Teva sandals, which could be seen as either a good thing or a bad thing. Good because I didn't ruin other shoes, but bad because....well...ewwwww. It was very gross! It was fairly easy to identify the most likely cache spot, but we didn't think it was that at first because of the prickers surrounding it. I mean, no one would hide a cache here, right? I'm sure the prickers weren't there when it was hidden. Anyway, I left Julian and Ryder behind and went in after it myself. Not much else to say about this cache.
I can't wait to find a good spot for a cache so we can place our first cache. Until then I think it's really unfair to criticize others' placements. But I will say that I just don't see much of a point for a micro in the woods in a kind of trashy place to begin with. I wish there were more cool caches. Luckily, we did find one really cool one later in the day (T.O.W. -- Now that's how a micro should be done!) Anyway, more on that to come.

Bear Paughs retrieved it from Baker's Dozen

Baker's Dozen was an easy find. Ryder was playing on the equipment when Julian went after this one and he gets 100% credit for the find. The container was very cool. Phewww, it was stinky in the area because of the flooding, but the cache was dry.
Ryder was using the monkey bars (well, they were more like triangular rings, if that makes sense) and I realized that a year ago he couldn't do that without me or his dad holding up his legs. Sniff! My little one isn't so little anymore! Okay, so his dad and I are planning on having more little ones, but it was an emotional realization nonetheless.
After Baker's Dozen we made one more stop on the way home, at Park View Magic. We had wanted to do this last week but ran out of time, now we ran out of cache. This like many in the area, was probably washed away. We couldn't find part one. Too bad, it looks like an interesting cache. We hope it's replaced or confirmed to still be there soon. We are eager to do this cache!
So that was our day. We ended 4 for 7 attempts. Not our best day, but given the recent weather that's to be expected. Finding Merry-Go-Round Part 4 made up for the 3 DNFs -- that alone felt as good as 20 smilies!
Barring any more acts of God, we should find our 100th soon. I'm concerned we won't be able to make the 100th be the one we wanted it to be because of the ground being too soft. Oh well, we'll see how it goes. The boys are soooo excited!

Bear Paughs retrieved it from Anniversary Cache I

I just realized looking at the name of this cache that we're nearly at our one year anniversary. Of course, we're at less than 100 finds and still no hides (we're still looking for the right spot!) But the first 3 or 4 months we were on a roll before life circumstances prevented us from caching again until just recently. It's been a great year, but I'll probably save that for another log.
Anyway, this was an easy cache to find. I was nervous about getting there, but happy to see there were sidewalks and we weren't endangering ourselves in any way. Ryder was peeved that he didn't find it, but he didn't look too hard, either. Julian loved the container and the camo job.

Bear Paughs retrieved it from What did they build this out of?

From Merry-Go-Round Part 4 we moved onto What Did They Build This Out Of? This was the highlight of our day amongst a bunch of caches that were in kind of yucky shape, due to the flooding. This building was soooo very cool. The pagoda shape is really neat, and the materials it is build out of just look really interesting. Luckily the cache was easy to find, because there could be several hiding spots! We had a lot of fun here.
After Merry-Go-Round Part 4 we had our 2nd DNF at Wilford Brimley's Diabetic Nickle Exchange. If it was where I think it was, then we didn't even want to attempt it. We checked the area out for a little bit, but decided it wasn't meant to be today. We moved on and found success with a couple more caches.

I have never been more happy to cross a cache off of our DNF bookmark list than Merry-Go-Round Part 4. Why? Because I'll never have to go back and feel around the dirty gross area again. It took so many tries and today it was easy. I don't know if it's because someone else moved it and it was therefore easier, or if my helpers who were assigned to inspect the area didn't do their job thoroughly the other times we tried this. I had to do the dirty work, laying down on the ground and doing the full inspection. But we found it. Yayyyyy! I'll tell you, the final cache better be worth it, given the trouble we've had with this series.
This was the second attempt for the day. The first cache we tried was 71 quickie, but that was a DNF. Bummer. Ryder enjoyed climbing a tree anyway. We'll probably try it again next week some time.
