First Geocoin in Orbit

One face has an image of the space shuttle Atlantis blasting off from pad 39A at the KSC on its way to the International Space Station with Commander Steve Frick and Pilot Alan Poindexter at the controls. The mission (STS122) was to deliver its European-built cargo — a science laboratory called Columbus. On the reverse is an image of an Astrolabe - a historical astronomical instrument used by classical astronomers, navigators, and astrologers. Its many uses included locating and predicting the positions of the Sun, Moon, planets and stars; determining local time given local latitude and vice-versa; surveying; and triangulation.
