Pythagoras is know today as a Greek Mathematician - but was he really Peter Gorus and society has changed the pronunciation over time?
Pythagoras of Samos was born between 580 and 572 BC, died between 500 and 490 BC. As well a being a mathematician he was the founder of the religious movement called Pythagoreanism. He is often revered as a great mathematician, mystic and scientist.
The overall shape of the coin is one proof of the Pythagoran Theorem - a2+b2=c2 - which is a way of determining is a triangle has a right angle - very important for getting buildings square.
While this theorem now bears his name, it was known and previously utilized by the Babylonians and Indians. Pythagoras, or his students, are creditied with finding the first proof.
