Current Goal

We started this travel bug after we found a key which was hidden by fourth graders as a part of their geography lesson. Our family thought this was a neat idea. We picked up three student's keys and with the permission expressed on the cache site (GC1CTED), we turned the keys into travel bugs for the students to watch their keys journey around the map! Two thumbs up to this school for thinking outside of the box and coming up with an exciting and engaging way to reach students. We hope that the students will enjoy watching their keys travel. This particular key was from H.B.

The mission of this travel bug is to travel far and wide to stay as active as possible for the student watching their key/trackable! As you make your post, please give some details about the area that you hid the key in, what may make this area special or something neat in the surrounding community or area. Let's help make learning fun!! :)

Right behind the playground (you can see it in the background of the picture), the county provides space for people to have some space in a community garden. These gardens are very well maintained and seem to be having a productive year despite the drought in the area.

My daughter lives in Ypsilanti, MI and there are many, many little county parks nearby. They are favorite places for us to visit with her daughter Lily. Last time I visited, we had a picnic here and played on the playground. We recently figured out that there are two geocaches here as part of a county-wide project for caching.

There are lots of covered bridges in Pennsylvania. I got this one while finding a cache in Somerset County for the PA all counties challenge and on page 87 for the PA DeLorme challenge. It appears to be one of a series of covered bridge caches. There are some covered bridge mystery caches in central PA where you visit 4-5 covered bridges nearby, find the answers to several questions and then go find an ammo can out in a State Gamelands in the area.

An interesting historical spot marking a former mill that was instrumental in the early settling of this area (in the late 1700s).

This virtual cache might be an interesting history lesson for you. Check out the picture of the marker for more information. By the way, this cache is relatively close to the Flight 93 memorial from September 11, 2001 - unfortunately, I ran out of time and could not visit on this trip.

    • The sign marking the spot This sign is the basis for the Sin Tax cache. It's an interesting story that you might want to research. By the way, I obscured the date because it is the answer to this virtual cache (and giving away the answer would be a sin). ;-)

Fort Coulter was apparently built around 1781 to protect local settlers from the Native Americans - this marker is all that is left. It is a beautiful valley in southern PA.

I needed to do some southern counties/grids for the PA challenges, and this (and one nearby) get me Bedford County and Page 88 (relatively close to the Mason-Dixon line on the southern base of Pennsylvania). This area is steeped in Civil War stuff (as you might expect), but also in stuff pertaining to the Revolutionary War. This cache marks the place of a critical meeting between George Washington and General Forbes about strategy relating to an attack on Ft. Duquesne in 1758. Cool stuff.
