I'm Starting my travels near New Hall Prison in Wakefield.
The Open Prison system began here at New Hall as an experiment in 1933 due to an increase in prison population and lack of suitable employment. The success of this led to the opening of New Hall Camp in 1936. New Hall was re-roled in 1961 as a Senior Detention Centre for male young offenders and during this time the 'Short, Sharp, Shock' regime was introduced on a couple of occasions.
In 1987 the Prison was again re-roled to a women's prison.
My goal is to visit ( be in veiw of) as many Prisons as possible, there are 139 Prisons in England and Wales alone. Once I have travelled around the UK I would like to visit Prisons in Other Countries, My ultimate goal would be to Visit Alcatraz..
I would love to pick up stories about the prisons i visit along the way
I would like to have my photo taken with the HMP signs for the prisons I visit :)
