About This Item

I don't like to see a good cache die, so in the spirit of the ongoing survival of Canada's First Geocache, I've created this coin to travel along with me while performing maintenance on both my caches, and the caches of others! Let's keep these original caches active and in good condition!

An early November snow storm? Sounds like a perfect evening to go for a hike in Palgrave Forest and check up on my night Cache. I wasn't worried about the container being missing, but more that the area had changed and the references used in the hints might have fully decomposed. Plus, each year of pine needles adds a LOT of ground cover to camouflage things even more...

After previously hiking Cold Creek in the snow today, (to replace the Bog Trail cache container) I didn't have the time, or energy to check up on all the stages, and replace any missing fire tacks. However, I wanted to ensure the final was findable for those stuck with a DNF. We made our way to the clearing, and as expected, the rotting stump with the diamond reflector pattern was now fully decomposed, and non-reflective. So, that eliminates MY reference point... Hmm. 3 inches of snow doesn't help much... Poke, poke, prod, prod... I think the pine needles are probably 3 inches deep... No "thud" or "clunk" as I was hoping for. Ok Elf, it is here somewhere, within 3 meters of this spot, go to work...

Elf did a bit of sweeping, and a few seconds later had a beep... beep... beeeeep, beeeeep, beeeeep! Bingo! I knew it was still safe. (And once you find it, you'll understand why) The "lid" was partially decomposed from all the time spent under the pine needles, but surprisingly the enclosure was still very solid. I snapped a photo of the container, and the last page of the log book at 18:00h. So the cache lives, and is available to be found! I have updated the hints, and adjusted the reference points to the current environment, and made it easier to be found for the time being.

I will be back for another maintenance visit with a replacement "lid", and later will try to rework and simplify the stages. This will likely result in the eventual archival of this cache listing, and the creation of a new one to reflect the changed difficulty. But I want to give any DNFers a chance to claim the smiley and sign the log book before then. So get on it!

If you need even more of a hint, send me a message, or shoot me a text. I want you to find it, and enjoy it!

An early November snow storm? Sounds like a perfect day to go for a hike in Cold Creek and do some cache maintenance! We elected to park outside the gate, as it supposedly closes at 4:30, and hike in from there. The Bog Boardwalk trail is still closed, as the boardwalk is undergoing restoration. The cache still remains accessible though, as it is South of the bog, up above the lowlands. Follow the main Yellow trail to point 6, and take the trail from there. Today I brought out an entire replacement cache container, complete with swag, and a fresh log book. It is still a 30 call ammo can, and hidden in the same place. We made the swap at 16:44h and continued along. Thanks everyone for visiting over the years! It is neat seeing what has changed at Cold Creek, and how much is still around from when the cache was first hidden in 2002.

My replacement GPSr finally arrived after a minor boating incident last year sent my old faithful to the bottom of the lake... D'oh! Anyhow, figured a nice hike would be a great way to test it out. Found the cache at 20:10h and have the contents a quick clean, and refresh. Anything rusty, mouldy or wet was removed. We added some new swag, and some new silica packs to protect the log book and contents. Thanks for the fun evening hike. Beautiful area, we will return to explore more for sure!

Noted some of the previous logs claim the cache was stuck, so we took a day trip up to Belwood Lake to check up on it. Found the cache partly visible, but quite unstuck. The rope that supported it had been cut, and the log book was missing. We replaced the missing log with a temporary mini log book, replaced the cut string with some cable, and added some swag. Visited at 15:50h. Cache should be good to go for a while!

Finally passing through the area today, and I had a replacement cache ready to go. I made my way up the tree and couldn't spot the old cache container. Not that I could recall exactly what branch it was secured to, as there are just so many... LOL. Anyhow, there is a new container in place, with a new log sheet. This time it is a juice bottle preform, so larger than a regular preform, but not quite big enough to fit a geocoin. Signed my maintenance visit into the log sheet at 19:55h. Hopefully this one survives a bit better. I know this is a popular tree for the locals to climb. Thanks for visiting!

Elf and I were up visiting the Kiosk area for 4 days of backcountry camping, fishing, and relaxing. Yesterday she caught a nice large mouth bass, and it made a very tasty lunch. Today we chopped and split a good sized birch to get our favourite campsite all stocked up with fire wood. After, we paddled over to the rail bed, landed the canoe, and hiked the remainder of the way to visit the cache. Everything is still in excellent shape, and I signed the log at 17:38h. Now to see if we can catch another fish tonight! Thanks everyone for visiting, and sharing one of my favourite spots in Algonquin.

Visited today accompanied by Elf to replace the missing container with a sweet upgrade to a .50cal Ammo Can full of treasure! We couldn't find any signs of the old lock and lock, but didn't have very long to hunt. Beautiful day on the trails.
