Current Goal

As a photographer, I've decided to conduct a little experiment while promoting two of my favorite hobbies: Photography and GeoCaching. This is a rather unique Travel Bug, in that there's a fully functional digital camera attached to it. The idea here is that I would really like for my fellow GeoCachers to use this camera to take interesting and fun pictures while exploring the great outdoors (and various great indoors) all over the world.

RULES:

1. First and foremost, please do not keep my camera or any of its components. Trackables sometimes go missing because someone decides they like the item a little too much to part with. Please don't be that person. That is theft. I'm trying to do something fun for myself and for other GeoCachers, and I would like for as many people as possible to participate.

2. Please be kind to my camera. I understand that GeoCaching can be a rugged activity, which is why I'm sending it out enclosed in a protective case. Please be sure to put the camera back in its case before putting it into another cache, and please also confirm as part of your logs that you've found it with its case and that you're dropping it off with its case. I also ask that you treat this trackable respectfully (as you should be treating ALL trackables), by acknowledging that it IS someone else's property, and taking extra care not to lose or misplace it. Trackable owners trust you to keep their items safe and to move each along per its stated mission. That's the role you accept by removing a trackable from a cache. Please respect that role and don't take it lightly.

3. Be creative with your photos! The camera may be old, but the SD card can hold plenty of images and you're currently someplace that I'm not! Take a photo of the place where you found the camera (no cache spoilers please!), and then go off and capture some images of interesting or unique things and places in your area. I love to travel, and I would be immensely happy to see what my camera is seeing! You also don't have to shoot all of the images in one or two days. Take a week or so if you prefer - give it a little time to get some really great photos! Just don't keep it TOO long, since it really needs to keep moving.

4. I understand that batteries do eventually go dead, and that they or other parts may go missing. This camera operates on two AA batteries which are readily available, however since this is my trackable and my camera, maintenance - even remotely - is my responsibility. If you have retrieved this trackable and you've discovered that the batteries are dead, please send me a private message along with an address where I can send a pair of fresh batteries and the replacements will be shipped to you right away. If you'd like to donate a pair of fresh batteries, that'd be really great too! Likewise, if you find that the batteries or the SD card are outright missing, I will be happy to ship you replacements for those as well.

6. If you find this travel bug and discover that the camera is not functioning at all, please let me know right away. I will try some super basic troubleshooting and if that doesn't work, I'll send you a return envelope and ask that you ship it home to me so I can fix it. Here's what should happen:

A) Send me a private message or email me with a mailing address and a note on whether or not you would like the camera sent back to you.

B) I will ship you a prepaid mailer. This will allow you to drop the camera in a padded envelope and have it shipped back to me AT ABSOLUTELY NO COST TO YOU.

C) I will drain the camera of its photos, replace the battery, and perform other maintenance tasks in an effort to fix the camera. If my attempts at repair are unsuccessful, I will replace the camera. If you've noted that I can ship the camera back to you, I will do so - again at no cost to you. Feel free to take and upload your photos, and then release the trackable back into the wild as per usual. If you do not specify that I can ship the camera back to you, I will simply re-launch it in another local cache and start the process all over again.

7. If you would prefer to not partipate in this photography experiment, I would then thank you to please simply keep the camera safe before promptly moving it to its next location. smiley

INSTRUCTIONS:

To operate the camera, simply slide the lens cover open, point, and shoot! Optimal settings have already been preselected for general use, so you shouldn't have to press any buttons other than the big shiny shutter button. Please don't change any of the camera's settings so as not to confuse the next person to find it. The camera takes a standard SD card and has been preloaded with a 256MB card, which can hold roughly 200 photographs. Since this camera uses digital zoom, I would encourage you NOT to zoom in on anything unless absolutely necessary to get the shot you want.

After getting a bunch of great photos, simply plug the camera into any computer using a standard Mini-USB cable. The camera has been configured to appear as an external disk drive. (If you're using a Mac, you may get a warning that "OS X can’t repair the disk "HP43xCAMERA." You can safely ignore this warning.) Open the drive, navigate into the DCIM folder and then into 100HP43X, and your photos will be right there! Alternatively, if you have an SD card reader you can eject the SD card and retrieve your photos that way, however I would advise this method only for more advanced users.

After you've saved the photos to your computer, please be sure to delete them from the camera's memory/card!

Once you've retrieved your photos from the camera, it's time to share them with the GeoCaching community! This is really easy to do, as it piggybacks on entering a log for the trackable itself. Simply enter a log entry for the trackable as appropriate ("Write Note" is a good one for uploading photos before you release the trackable back into the wild), write a little about your experience, and then submit the log.

Once the log has been posted, you will have an option to upload photos to the log: Click this option, and add your photos to the log along with a fun explanation! You can add multiple photos per log entry, and all of them will be entered into the trackable's photo gallery.

Everyone who participates will be thanked, and I will make special note of exceptional photos in the trackable's description. I'm really excited about this project, and I hope to have years of active participation from GeoCachers everywhere.

Thank you for your cooperation and as always, Happy GeoCaching!
