I found this coin (copy) in Aughanbaugh GC17A9Q not Pine Creek as shown. Perhaps it has done some unlogged hiking? I left it in Aughanbaugh since I don't expect to get it anywhere appropriate anytime soon. Thanks.

I may be stretching it a bit here regarding “cache on a hiking trail of any sort.” But I forgot I promised to go biking on the Pine Creek rail-to-trail with my buddies. The Pine Creek Rail Trail is ~42 miles long, winding thru PA’s Grand Canyon area. It’s a very popular destination, read more here http://www.pagreenways.org/db-Greenwaydetails.asp?GW_ID=69 & http://www.dcnr.state.pa.us/forestry/oldgrowth/pinecreek.aspx & http://www.wellsboropa.com/pages/welcome/pa_grand_canyon.php . You’ll actually find almost as many people walking & hiking it as biking it. I love seeing 3 generations worth of families on it! There are many hiking trails nearby, some actually leading into it. Two of my absolute favorite nearby trails (within 1 - 5 miles of the cache) are the 42 mi Black Forest Trail ( http://www.midatlantichikes.com/bfts.htm ) and the 9 mi Golden Eagle Trail. I almost think the Golden Eagle is the best day hike in PA, some nice rocky vistas. Day hikes on the BFT usually require a car shuttle, but worth the effort. A very serious rocky up & down work-out, but you get great payoffs. The trail often runs on the edge of ledges, so you get great vistas and that wonderful “edge-of-earth” thrill! The BFT is one of the hardest & most popular backpacking trails in PA. It also has 2 link trails to the 85 mi Susquehannock Trail. You just have to keep an eye open for snakey “friends” on the trail! I started my 25 mi round trip bike ride today in Blackwell. There are 2 trails that run near there also. The West Rim Trail is also popular with backpackers. I think it is much easier though and the nicer views are at the northern end (see West Rim Treasure GC14A6). PA’s MidState Trail ( http://hike-mst.org/ ) also passes thru the Blackwell area. I love taking it up to nearby Gillespie Point. It’s a great way to see what shape you’re in! Eventually the MST will be part of the Great Eastern Trail ( http://www.greateasterntrail.org/ ), being created to take congestion off of the AT. The MST will eventually extend into NYS to connect with the Finger Lakes Trail ( http://www.fingerlakestrail.org/ ). The FLT is part of the North Country National Scenic Trail, currently under development ( http://northcountrytrail.org/ ) & ( http://www.nps.gov/noco ). Can you imagine, eventually you’ll be able to hike from GA all the way to ND! Read about PA trails here: http://www.kta-hike.org/Trails/MapsGuides.shtml . All in all, a 25 mi bike ride, a 5 mi hike, a cool dip in Pine Creek, & a big orange full moon for the drive home! Looking forward to your future hikes!

  • Pine Creek Rail-to-Trail, headed south Located in the PA Grand Canyon
  • Pine Trail, ~0.3 mi from cache on other side of Pine Creek
  • Lance Raisch Trail, ~0.3 mi from cache On the opposite side of Pine Creek on Naval Run Rd. Some nice campsites here. I think you can access the BFT with this or Pine Trail.
  • Black Forest Trailhead, near Slate Run Just up the forest road from the Manor Hotel where we ate lunch.
  • Love them topo lines for the BFT! Yep, steep steep steep on this portion of the Black Forest Trail.
  • West Rim Trail, Southern Terminus Across from the Rattlesnake Rocks parking area, ~1 mi south of Blackwell parking area
  • Start of the climb to Gillespie Point on the MST ~0.5 mi road hike from Blackwell parking area to MidState Trailhead
  • View south down Pine Creek from Gillespie Pt After ~1000' elevation gain over ~0.9 mi on MST. Humidity caused suffering!
  • View northward from Gillespie Point Did the 1.4 mi hike in 50 min. Not bad considering my weight gain & the humidity.
  • The backside of Gillespie Pt. Either road hike back down Big Run Rd. or continue on the MST until the footbridge. Then a bushwhack across the creek to a logging grade dumping onto a shorter road hike.
  • You've got a friend in Pennsylvania! Gives new meaning to PA's tourism slogan. This fellow was buzzing with happiness to see me after a BFT hike on an earlier date.

I intended to leave you today at a cache previously found last Fall, High Rock GCMVMD. This cache is located on the High Rock Trail in World’s End State Park. I thought it would be a good choice since it gets a lot of activity. I’ve only just started exploring this park last year, and its rugged beauty is really starting to grow on me. Read more about the park here http://www.dcnr.state.pa.us/stateparks/parks/worldsend.aspx . Besides its own very nice trails, the LT also passes thru this park as well as the LT’s Red X Link Trail (RedX 6). In fact, the LT & High Rock trail meet & run together briefly in the vicinity of the High Rock vista & cache. I think the High Rock Trail use to run lower on the ridge, but some fatal falls led to a reroute. With all these trails, you can string together a variety of nice hiking loops in this park and catch three very nice vistas to boot. Plus lots of caches. What I didn’t plan on was finding a backpacker preparing to hunker down for the night near the cache site! And he didn’t plan on any hikers at this time of the evening either. We had a nice chat while he prepared dinner. He had done 46 miles total of the LT on the previous 2 days. He couldn’t get a campsite in the park, so he was planning on sleeping here near the vista’s railing. I told him I hoped he isn’t a sleep walker! A straight drop down! We laughed and then he invited me to join him the next morning for the last 13 miles of the LT, his “easy” day ending near the famous “Haystacks” (site of another cache, JQ008-Loyal sock, GCA3B). I said sure, I’d be able to keep up with him for all of 5 minutes then be left behind eating dust! We laughed again and I wished him a good night. I almost did get to join him though. I found out the hard way they close the Forksville gas station very early! After the AAA cavalry paid a call, I returned home very late. Hence this retro-log. Sorry!

While researching appropriate hiking trail caches for you, I discovered this cache was going to be archived the very next day! It was near another cache (High Knob Memorial GCNN3Z), and I remember the views from hiking in here with my club. You supposedly can see 7 PA counties from the overlook. And I had a perfect low humidity day. Unfortunately, I got a late start & took a while at an earlier cache, so no time for the longer hike. But my choice down was still pretty exciting thanks to some serious erosion on the High Knob Trail! As you can tell from the cache name, this was at the "halfway" point on the Loyalsock Trail. The Loyalsock Trail is a backpacker’s fave and is very rocky underfoot (as my complaining footsies remind me). And I am discovering there are lots of caches hidden along it! All the more reason for me to get more comfortable with solo hiking on it. This section is located in PA’s Wyoming State Forest. The LT was originally laid out by various Boy Scout Troops and then was extended to its current 59 miles & maintained by the Alpine Club of Williamsport . It traverses the Allegheny High Plateau region of PA with numerous descents & ascents (665 - 2140’ elevation extremes). With this gem of a trail, you get a good workout with some nice vistas & lots of nice waterfalls & rock formations & the cool waters of Loyalsock Creek. You can read all about it here http://www.lycoming.org/alpine/Index.htm & here http://www.dcnr.state.pa.us/forestry/hiking/loyalsock.aspx . Since this cache was being archived, I didn’t leave you here. Because your intended final drop was…

I have only dayhiked a few sections of the AT-- both the PA & NJ sides of the Delaware Water Gap and in the Hamburg, PA / Hawk Mountain area. I especially recommend Hawk Mountain for both the raptor-watching and the pristine glacier boulder field. The AT thru-hikers just amaze me-- a tip of the hiking cap to them. After picking you up from this cache, I hoofed it on the trails to the Nature Conservancy's nearby Frenchman's Bluff Overlook. I didn't have a camera on me today, but will try to post a pic from 5/06 if I can find the picture disk! So many trails, so little hiking tread...

  • The nearby Frenchman's Bluff Overlook Follow Tanglewood's trails to the adjoining Nature Conservancy property. The trail to this Chemung River Valley vista is right on the edge at spots! This photo dates from 5/ or 6/06 & made it into my company's photo calendar!
