According to an ancient Greek nuisance named Aesop, this tortoise challenged a hare to a race. Naturally the hare got the jump on the tortoise but he got so far ahead he stopped for a nap, at which point the tortoise caught up, plodded by and finished first. This, according to Aesop, proves that: “Slow and steady wins the race” and not “The fix was in.” (One suspects Aesop didn’t play the ponies much.)
We wanted to see if Aesop got it right so we are staging a re-match. The tortoise (a Florida resident named Gofer) will race Marcher the hare from Tequesta, Florida, to a cache near Anchorage, Alaska. Both will be placed on 31st of January and the first to be picked up by an impartial judge (he’s a vegetarian) will be declared winner. The loser will be declared loser (for the sake of symmetry) while Aesop will be declared an unregistered alien and ordered to change his name so something spellable.
Marcher isn't over-confident, but it's a long race and he might get sleepy. Don't let him nap too long!
