Current Goal

To be put into the hands of an “Amazing Race” producer!

About This Item

Be a part of geocaching history! Introducing the first video travel bug designed to get it’s owners’ on a television reality show. We are Bob and Dan from Erie, Pennsylvania. We have been friends for 25 years and want to be on the CBS show “The Amazing Race”, the exciting reality series featuring 11 teams of 2 that race around the globe to a finish line where the winners split a million dollars! Check it out at www.CBS.com.

We have sent in our 10-page application along with video and passport. Now the goal is to get this bug directly into the hands of an Amazing Race producer (or send them to the below link where they can view it online). We are confident that if someone on the production staff views our video, they will want to meet us.

Anyone can claim they made a great 3 minute application video - WE SHOW YOU ! You don’t need to be a fan of “The Amazing Race” to enjoy this, but there are a few in-jokes that diehard viewers will appreciate. The video is in MPEG format. Feel free to make a copy of this CD but please handle with extreme care and do not make modifications of any kind! If it is damaged or unplayable - contact me immediately (J Marac) through Geocaching.com and I will replace it.

WHAT CAN YOU DO?? Do you know any of the Amazing Race producers? Jerry Bruckheimer, Burt Van Muster, Alex Rader, David C. Brown, Allison Chase, Barry Hennessey James E. Wade, Hayma Washington, and Evan Weinstein are some of them. Most geocachers will not know these people personally - and we realize this is an extreme long shot - but we are not intimidated by the odds! If you can’t give this to one of the producers directly, just keep it heading towards California, there lies the best chance for this to get into the right hands. Remember: each step gets us closer!

Also you can cheer us on by posting messages, or writing a review of the video on the geocaching/tracktravelbugs page. Have a camera? Upload a digital picture of yourself or group so we can have a photo record of everyone who helped us on our journey! We will send personal feedback thanking you for your involvement.

Find the bug for final details. (PLEASE NOTE: The travel bug tag is affixed to the inside cover of the case) Thanks everyone and wish us luck!

Want to see the video, but can't get to the actual bug itself? It is now posted for easy viewing on video.google.com You can view or download it by simply going to video.google.com and typing Amazing Race in the Search Video box and you will see it pop up (along with some other Amazing Race hopefuls). Or an even easier way is to go to the following link: http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-652202264955089359&q=amazing+race&pl=true

Greetings friends. The TB hasn't moved a lot of miles recently but it has moved over 1 million years! It's still in a great location of the country and we don't expect the next Amazing Race casting call for a little while longer so everything is cool.

One geocacher, a super-nice lady who I have had the privilege to meet on a couple of occasions, set up a cache specifically dedicated to this Amazing Race Travel Bug. Her goal is to increase awareness of the bug, and to get me to cross into her home state of Ohio and sign the log. It is appropriately entitled "Autograph Please". Check it out: Use Waypoint GCN3PK

Hi Guys from Australia!

Good luck with your efforts - I've been following this travel bug on its' journey pretty much since it was released.

I am thrilled to see that you have a real chance of this video ACTUALLY getting to its' mission - hopefully personal goals will be fulfilled as well.

We do get the Amazing Race here in Australia - and I tell you what - I'll be watching it if you guys are on because even though I've never touched this bug, never been anywhere near where its' been, I feel like I've been along for the ride too - and I bet I'm not the only one.

Everytime theres' a log, or it looked like something had gone wrong, its' been into the maps and charts to try and work out where the bug is now, and where its' heading.

Good entertainment guys - heres' hoping its even better WHEN you are on the show!!!

Funny how things work out. Little miner and I decided on the cuff to get a little caching in today since for the first time in what seems like forever it's not raining cats and dogs. (I know you folks back east are laughing but this is the LEFT coast after all) Anyway, we picked the $3 million dollar view purely by accident-the first one that came up on my screen. Off we went to find a ton of loot! And this weird cd thingie. I really didn't check it out when we got it but when I got it home and popped it in the computer I was amazed. I love The Amazing Race. I'm amazed at how far it's come and now how close it is.
But, this is LA. At first I figured I'd let fate take it's course and drop the TB et al in a cache close to CBS just for fun. Sadly, most of them are disabled or micros or both. Some that are getting farther away are the right size but then, as listed in the cache pages, there get to be problems with homeless people and the like. Like I said, this is LA.
But the ironic part here is that I used to work in the movie industry until the 16 hour, 7 day weeks got a little old. I did some work at CBS. I know some guys who still work there, although they are not in any way connected with the Amazing Race. But, I figure I'll give them a try. It's a lot better than risking my life putting this thing in a cache in an urban park here in the city.
Stay tuned, I have an email out to these guys right now.

Good News, Bad News, and then more Good News!

1) Good news! Our Travel Bug has traveled almost 2500 miles in 4 months and is now in a prime cache location called “The $3 Million Dollar View”. I love the name of that cache – even though Bob and I will only be completing for $1 million!

2) Bad News! As I assumed, CBS put out the call for new applications when the last season of the Amazing Race ended in mid-Febuary. I had hoped this would be our opportunity to reapply and get our application on top. Unfortunately, CBS is having a “Family” Amazing Race for the following season and only wants families of 4 to apply. (This of course, leaves Bob and I out.)

3) More Good News! – Due to the increasing popularity of “The Amazing Race”, CBS has ordered two additional seasons (not including the newest season which will start March 1st). After the Family Amazing Race (Series 8), the Amazing Race 9 will then return to the series’ regular format with teams of 2 competing. This actually works out to our advantage as it gives us a few more months (probably about 3) to get the TB into the hands of an Amazing Race producer. Also, being selected later in the year actually is better for both Bob and myself for a variety of scheduling reasons. So you see, all things are working together for good and I remain thoroughly optimistic!

Many thanks again to all who have moved the bug along and sent encouraging emails. (Keep ‘em coming). I have come to appreciate the Geocaching community even more through this little experiment.

Yours truly,
Dan

Just adding an update. Grabbed the TB out of that frozen cache just before a foot of snow dropped. It is in great shape and the repairs that Team D & D did are very nice.

I drove the cache out to the Los Angeles area and it is now with me in Redondo Beach. I was able to do the drive in just over 2 days. It has been a hectic week for me and I have just had time to watch the video. It is GREAT! I watch The Amazing Race every week and can't wait to cheer for you guys when you make it on.

I am now looking for a good spot to drop this and have posted a note here to try to find a good home: http://www.socalgeocachers.com/modules.php?name=Forums&file=viewtopic&t=1477

I plan on dropping it soon.

Look what I found!! I am a huge Amazing race fan. My wife and I want to be on it but we have not sent in a video yet. We watch every episode together.

Bug is in great condition - just a bit frozen up here in MN though.

I think I can move it a bit closer to the destination.

Thanks!

This looked like a good spot. Bugs, Dogs and People frequent this Cache. It has had a fair amount of visits even during the cold weather months. Hope you guys make it. I've done all I can; it's up to fellow cachers to get you the rest of the way. Good luck to you guys. We'll be watching the logs for the bug and watching the TV for you. Hope you and your bug get to California soon. A local cacher, (Early Starts)had mentioned a trip to LA on Jan 20th.

Hopefully they'll bring you along for the ride.

Good luck again!
