A zip over to North Balwyn to visit my Aunt today. Consistently among Melbourne's top 20 most exclusive postcodes, the suburb was lampooned in the 1974 song by Australian band The Skyhooks, Balwyn Calling. There is a jigidi series of caches there based on handbags that I’ve been slowly ticking off over the years. 👜

It’s the Australian Rules Football Grand Final day in Australia today. You went to Sunshine for a Grand Final lunch to watch Collingwood (The Magpies) defeat Brisbane (The Lions). My kids have not been in Australia for this before and can’t believe the hype and frenzy. “It’s nothing like this in England”. Last year, it was my team, The Geelong Cats, who won. Alas, they were not even close this year. 🏆

Time to head back to Melbourne. You took the ferry across Port Philip Bay from Sorrento to Queenscliff. Ate our potato cakes on the top deck while watching the scenery go by. No dolphins were spotted escorting the boat. ⛴️

The family went for a hike at Cape Paterson. It’s the little seaside town of Wonthaggi and its big coal mine. It was one of the largest and most dangerous collieries in Australia. I like the coast and beaches at Cape Paterson much more than Inverloch. There are cliffs and lots of rockpools. 🦀

Brrrr, it’s a bit chilly at Inverloch, a town on the Gippsland Coast. The town sits on Anderson Inlet, a shallow estuary where the Tarwin River enters Bass Strait. It forms a 2,400 hectare almost-enclosed bay next to Inverloch, for which it provides a popular and protected beach. Our beach house is out of town on the wilder coast. Great when a storm rolls in. 🌊

Into central Melbourne for an early morning event near the Town Hall. Luckily I noticed that my train line was closed for track engineering before I headed to the station. I used to have my school end of year Speech Nights at the Melbourne Town Hall. 👩🏼🎓

Up to the in-laws. Went for a walk along popular Merri Creek (which is in suburban Melbourne) and met a tiger snake. That’s always exciting. Among the number of deaths caused by snakebite in Australia, those from tiger snakes are exceeded only by the brown snake. It was a reminder that caching in Australia is different to Germany. 🐍

Time to show CuteOtter more of Australia so you joined us on a day trip to Geelong and then across to Colac. The plains around Colac are the third largest volcanic plain in the world and the remnants of the extinct volcanoes make up the hills in the area. 🛣️
