I had a few hours spare so took you on a tour of ‘my’ part of Canberra - Narrabundah, Kingston, and Manuka, which is where I lived after the Curtin disaster. Stopped at Canberra train station which is still a temporary solution almost 100 years after Canberra was established. Despite Canberra being a planned city, no one thought of the train and now no one can agree where to put the permanent station. No fewer than eight separate locations considered but nothing comes of them. 🚂

Welcome to Canberra, the capital city of Australia. I lived and worked here for two years and you are here visiting my friends. The City was established in 1913 and is home to about half a million people.
The Australian magpie this cache is named after are friendly birds for most of the year and then some become aggressive in the “swooping season” and attack dogs and humans. There are even signs up to warn people. (Yes, everything in Australia is out to kill you). Studies have shown that magpies can recognise at least 30 different humans and don’t attack people they like, so be nice to your magpies! 🦅

I checked my map for any oldies for my JASMER and saw there was one in Hornsby Heights, far northern Sydney. March 2001. So you jumped on a bus, then a train, then another bus, and then a couple of kilometres walk. Saw some echidnas too. Then did it all in reverse. 🦔

I didn’t get much chance to cache in Central Sydney yesterday so I returned today for a few more hours. I took you to the Botanic Gardens area back past the Opera House towards Circular Quay. Views, views, views! Then it was back to Balmain for dinner and Pet Nat which is THE drink to have in Sydney right now. 🥂

Back in Sydney and caught up with my friend from London who moved home. I have not seen her for two years so she was pretty excited to be dragged along to do an Earthcache. Mrs Macquarie was the wife of Major-General Lachlan Macquarie, Governor of New South Wales from 1810 to 1821. Folklore has it that she used to sit on the rock and watch for ships from Great Britain sailing into the harbour and enjoy the view. It is a stunning view.🪑

You have headed about an hour west of Sydney to Katoomba in the Blue Mountains National Park. Its a super spectacular spot and is a UNESCO World Heritage listed area. I’ve hiked and gone canyoneering many times around here in the past and have watched Mr Wombat rock climb on the Three Sisters rock formation before that was banned. The sisters’ names are Meehni (922 m), Wimlah (918 m), and Gunnedoo (906 m) but we now know that the “Dreamtime” story about the sisters was made up by a Caucasian girl and is not a story from the Gundungurra people who inhabited the area for thousands of years. 👩👧👧

Welcome to Sydney, New South Wales. It’s Australia’s second largest city and it’s most beautiful. We had one goal today - GC3E Lane Cove, the oldest cache in Australia. It’s a May 2000 cache although that seems a bit debatable to me. It’s in beautiful Lane Cove National Park and you would have thought you were miles from anywhere until people in a swan pedalo splashed past and ruined the illusion. Still, it was a lovely walk with lots of Wallabies, Eastern Water Dragons, and Cockatoos to be seen. 🦘

A wet day in Melbourne today so I kept my geocaching inside with an Earthcache at St Paul’s Cathedral. I used to change trams here everyday to go to school but I never once went inside the church. The interior is a mixture of sandstone from the Barrabool Hills and Waurn Ponds limestone, with horizontal stripes of Victorian bluestone, giving the cathedral a warm colouring. Looks quite good actually. ⛪️

Sidetracked caches are becoming more popular in Australia so I thought I should add to my UK tally and find some. I chose the (previously named) Epping line as a good place to hop on and hop off. Lalor was named in honour of Peter Lalor, a leader of the Eureka Stockade rebellion during the Victorian Gold Rush, and later a member of the Victorian parliament. 🚊
