Current Goal

Please Rescue Boo-Boo From His Current Cache

Boo-Boo (aka "The Hook") was born in Lake Clear, NY, and he would like to come back here some day, but at the moment, he needs to take an extended...vacation. He would prefer a non-extradition country, but the far side of any border will do. Please take and upload photos of him in far off places (to be used as future alibis). He would like to come home when the statute of limitations has expired, in the spring of 2014.

Boo-Boo would like to see the world beyond the Adirondack Park, and to drink deep of the well of experience. He wants to swim in both the Pacific and Atlantic oceans, skydive, surf, go skiing, boat down the Colorado, wrestle an alligator, sail beyond the horizon, play the slots at Caesar's Palace, eat spicy food and dance on Bourbon Street, meet a nice lady-gnome, and stay well-clear of the "Ceramic Mafia" which has people out looking for him. Any help you can give him will be appreciated.

About This Item

Behind the Boo-Boo lies a complex gnome

Boo-Boo is a tiny lawn-type gnome, indistinguishible from any other except for his missing right hand, which was lost in a mishap at "The Back Door" (a rough and tumble saloon which closed soon after his hasty departure, to be replaced by a fern-bar) in Saranac Lake, NY. He tends to be reticent about his past, and can take a while to warm up to strangers. He likes cold weather, mushroom soup, Ted Nugent, worms and bugs, and the "Quiller" books by Adam Hall.

During the trip through the sandhills of Nebraska, BooBoo strongly considered becoming a cowboy. No Joke. He REALLY wanted to do it, but couldn't find a cowboy hat that fit him properly. The 'genuine' cowboy life is a physically challenging life, but ultimately rewarding, and BooBoo wanted to be a part of it.

Nebraska and the midwest is quite well known for its corn-fed beef. During a recent business trip to Pennsylvania, I found that city folk enjoy Nebraska beef, too! There, on the menu, was a "Nebraska Rib-Eye". I didn't order it. (Why would I??) As a side note, I've noticed that the Rib-Eyes are considerably less expensive here. If you'd like to mail order what I (and many others) consider to be the best beef around, please email me and I can get you in contact with the right people.

Many people find this unusual, but certain individuals in our species ride beef for fun (and sometimes profit). I'm referring to bull riding. I truly believe that bull riders are among the toughest people around. And for good reason.

Boo-Boo didn't actually want to ride bulls... he just wanted to be a cowboy. He did, however, arrive in North Platte during Nebraskaland Days, which features several nights of rodeo.

Picture 1: Boo-Boo reads a newspaper insert promoting Nebraskaland Days. Although he wanted to go to the rodeo, he was nowhere to be found when we offered to take him.

Ahhh... The Dismal River. The following description is from the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission:

"The Dismal River is a true Sandhills river,
having its beginning and ending in the grasscloaked
hills that cover some 20,000 square
miles in north-central Nebraska. It is short by
most Nebraska river standards, flowing only
80 miles to its confluence with the Middle
Loup River at Dunning. It is the state’s wildest
and most undeveloped river, and was identified
by the National Park Service as being
worthy of designation in the National Wild
and Scenic Rivers System."

That being said, Boo-Boo encountered the Dismal River first hand.

After a bit of convincing, Boo-Boo decided to ride a wild animal. No... not a cow... he rode a horse for the (presumably) first time in his life. Technically, this horse wasn't 'wild', but I digress..... It seems that he enjoyed it... (well... he didn't vocally express his displeasure, at least)

If you decide to partake in the trail ride, please plan on a full day and possible sore buttocks. In return, you'll be rewarded with an authentic taste of 'the good life', as depicted in the following photographs.

Pictures 1 & 2 are of Boo-Boo on the horse.

SyriacaLady has, for a long time and when circumstances have allowed, participated in the annual trail ride at Hyannis, Nebraska. The trail ride is held in concert with the Windmill Festival in Hyannis.

Hyannis is nestled in the scenic sandhills of Nebraska. Hyannis, with a population of about 267 is the county seat of Grant County.

If you have the opportunity to visit Hyannis in June, you might just catch the Windmill Festival. There's lots of fun to be had during the festivities. In and around Hyannis, you'll find honest, forthright people who would willingly give their shirt to help a friend in need. They'd probably do that for a stranger, too. Traditional midwest values abound in Hyannis.

SyriacaLady decided to take Boo-Boo along on the trail ride this year. She captured a few photos of him.

  • A cow... Need I say more? No... Boo-Boo didn't ride a cow. He did beg to do so, however.

After arriving in North Platte, Nebraska, Boo-Boo settled in a bit. He was a bit tired from his travels and said that he wanted a couple of days to relax. Boo-Boo just wandered around the house for a few days. We did our best not to step on him, and were successful most of the time. We didn't have much going on for the next few days, so we let Boo-Boo take some well deserved rest. (... He's gonna need it... hehehe)

How often, while traveling, do you stop to 'smell the roses'? There are a vast multitude of scenic overlooks, historical markers, and plaques depicting interesting, factual information scattered throught this beautiful land. Who really takes a precious moment to enjoy these places? Our world is in overdrive. Our work, our play, our travel is on a strict schedule with little flexibility. Little regard for enjoyment and utter regard for results. Is this really what it's all about?

Ok... I'll quit now :)

Boo-Boo really seemed to enjoy the Nebraska native weeds. Much more so than his host family to be quite honest. Boo-
Boo insisted that we take this picture and we most happily obliged.

A westward will will go! There's nothing quite like the open road on a beautiful spring day.

It's a well known fact that gnomes from New York enjoy riding on the dashboard during long trips. Now be honest... have you EVER tried to keep a New Yorker Gnome buckled up? I'm here to tell ya... it ain't easy!

In an earlier post, I eluded to giving Boo-Boo a taste of 'the good life'. The second picture might explain things.

Syriaca, SyriacaLady and one of our two children (the two-year-old) thoroughly enjoy blue cheese. During our treks to the the Windy City, we make it a point to stop in Newton, Iowa to pick up the world's best blue cheese. The spectacular blue cheese that I'm referring to is Maytag Blue Cheese. Yes, this is the same family that makes washers and dryers; however their cheese is world renowned for its creamy yet firm texture, complex veining and robust flavor. This exquisite cave-ripened blue should be experienced to be fully appreciated.

Please don't interpret this as an advertisement. Far from it. We just love the stuff and thought that Boo-Boo would too. We were wrong in the latter account.

In the short time that Boo-Boo has been with us, we've found that he eats very little. When he does, he prefers that it NOT be blue cheese. OK... an important lesson learned.

Upon Boo-Boo's return to his next cache, he will be carrying along a catalog from Maytag. If you order something from them (or stop at their offices in Newton) tell them that Syriaca sent you! (They won't have ANY idea who I am, but it might be fun to see the expression on their faces... :))

Here our illustrious travel bug stands on the grand sign welcoming visitors to the Blue Cheese haven.

After retrieving Boo-Boo from the Illinois welcome center, the Syriaca family continued eastward to visit relatives in the Chicago area. Although Boo-Boo accompanied us (and we did a bit of geocaching along the way), there's no recorded history of Boo-Boo's misguided adventures along the way (probably for the best, methinks). We spent one full day in Chicago and began our trek back to west-central Nebraska. We began to photographically chronicle Boo-Boo's misadventures (at least the ones that were fit to show to the public) at the Iowa/Illinois border. While at the border, we attempted to find the Traveler's West cache, but didn't have much luck. Here, Boo-Boo poses for a portait at the Welcome sign.
