The 25th barn quilt is the “Corn and Beans” quilt block located on a barn at 2486 State Route 72 North in Wilson Township. The present owners of the farm are Jay and Judy Laycock. Jay’s parents, Joe and Betty Laycock, purchased the original 300-acre farm in 1960 from a group called Auction Mart. Auction Mart had bought the farm in the 1950s fort the purpose of consignment auctions. The large barn across the road from the “quilt barn” was built and indoor farm machinery auctions were conducted twice monthly.

Not much is known about the barn but the adjacent house was built by Amos Wilson in 1827 and is believed to be the oldest brick home in Clinton County. A historical map distributed by the Clinton County Historical Society for the observance of the Clinton County sesquicentennial authenticates that Wilson was the first Wilson Township settler. Both Wilson Creek and Wilson Township are named in honor of Amos Wilson. It is assumed the barn is of the same era and has hand-hewn rafters and wooden pins. An old hay fork still hangs from a rail at the top of the barn.

Coulter Cemetery is located on the farm behind the barn a quarter mile to the northeast. John Coulter was the farm owner when the cemetery was established and the remaining markers date to the Civil War era. State Route 72 was once called Coulter Pike.

The quilt design, “Corn and Beans,” was chosen because corn and soybeans are the primary crops grown on the 300-acre farm.

The sponsor of the quilt is the Clinton County Farm Bureau.
