The 28th quilt block along the Clinton County Barn Quilt Trail is Grandmother’s Fan. Roger and Sherry Asch own the barn and surrounding property which is graced with the ninth quilt block along the Clinton County Quilt Trail. The black barn, located at 1471 Greenfield-Sabina Road in Sabina is the perfect backdrop for the “Grandmother’s Fan” quilt block that Sherry chose.

John and Margaret Plymire, the original owners of the farm, traveled to Ohio by oxen cart in the early 1800’s and the ox yoke was found in the barn by the current owners. It is believed that the Plymires received this piece of land as payment for military service as part of the military land track.

The property was divided and handed down through the family and on September 19, 1882 Mary E. Plymire received a parcel which extended to Rattlesnake Creek. On November 27, 1934, T.G. and Elizabeth M. Foster purchased the land from the estate of Mary Plymire. On February 26, 1940 William Waddell purchased the land and then passed it on to his son Roger Waddell. At that time the original farm house was replaced by the current residence. The property changed hands again in 1976 and was purchased by John and Marjorie (Rolf) Tucker. In 1996 the Asch’s purchased the property.

Sherry chose the quilt design, Grandmother’s Fan, for it’s long history as a well loved pattern and as a fitting tribute to the history of this old barn and to all of the mothers, grandmothers, and great grandmothers who have dedicated their lives to raising children, and teaching them to love and appreciate quilting as a part of their cultural heritage.

Sherry also dedicates this quilt block to her best friend and quilting partner, Patty Clement, who lost her life to breast cancer. “I love you and miss you Patty, this one is for you!”
