The 17th barn located at 367 Gallimore Road, just outside of Port William, proudly displays the quilt block “Beautiful Star.”

Rosemary and the late Dr. Howard F. Ehlerding DVM purchased the farm from Odessa Coleman in 1956 and continue to own it. The bank (accessible on two levels) barn was built in 1915 and is constructed of rough cut oak beams. It is mortised together with wooden pins. The lower level was used for a grade A dairy at one time.

The Ehlerding children raised all of their 4-H livestock projects in the lower portion of the barn and on the cement feeding floor at the rear of the barn. Those projects included beef, sheep and hogs. The Ehlerdings raised the corn and ground feed for the children’s projects. Hay and straw were stored in the upper level of the barn.

The quilt block “Beautiful Star” is in memory of Howard’s service in the military during World War II. The sponsor for this quilt block prefers to remain anonymous.
