The 22nd quilt block,“Sunbonnet Sue” is mounted on a barn at 2846 Starbuck Road, at the end of Dover Road. The design was chosen in memory of Sam and Suzann (Irvin) Murphy.

This design is usually done in applique and is from the 1930s era. Details within the design represent many of the people who have lived at this residence over the years.

This farm originally consisted of 160 acres and was first established by James W. and Sarah E. (Fisher) Haws in the late 1850’s. Approximately 35 acres along Haws Chapel Road was forested at that time.

Construction of the house started in the early 1860s but was interrupted by the Civil War. Construction was completed after the war. After James Haws was killed by a lightning strike in 1876, Sarah Haws continued to operate the farm until her death in 1922.

The back barn was constructed of sawn beams with wooden pegs and was built between 1890 and 1900. In 1923, David C. and Maude (Fife) Murphy purchased the farm and raised seven boys, six of whom continue to farm in the area. In 1963, the sixth son, Hubert (Sam) Murphy, his wife Suzann and their three children moved to the farm. In 2004, the third generation of Murphy’s, Milton and Diane (Hopkins) Murphy, took over the responsibility of farming and preserving the land and heritage.

There is very limited parking at the cache site. Please watch children at this location since the road can at times be busy for a country road.
