Geocache Description:

This cache is dedicated to the ancient ruins of the Chirakman Plateau.

Cape Chirakman is one of the symbols of Kavarna. It is 3 km south from Kavarna, like a beautiful ending of a (formerly) nice valley (which is now spoiled by dozens of construction sites and apartment blocks), through which passes the way from the town to the the harbour and the sea.

The town of Kavarna was founded in the 5th century BC by Greek colonists who settled on the Chirakman Plateau in the colony Byzone (or Bizone). During the third and second century BC, the town played an important role between the local Thracian settlements and the Greeks. During the 1st century BC the ancient town fell in the sea because of a earthquake. The frontal part of the Chirakman broke off and together with the richest citizens fell into the Black Sea's waters.

During the 4th century AD a bulky fortified wall is erected. It protected the town from the numerous Barbaric attacks. The basilica (there's only the foundation wall left) also dates from the same time. It was discovered as a result of intense archaeological research.

The final conquering of the Dobrudzha lands by the Turks (end of 14th century) led to the full destruction of Chirakman and its inhabitants migrated to the territory of the present town.
