Atravessando o túnel, encontra-se o caís onde poderá visualizar mais uma vez as magnificas paisagens da Madeira. Devido à difícil orografia da Madeira, cedo o mar se tornou a via utilizada para transportar os géneros produzidos no meio rural com destino ao Funchal inclusive produtos vindos do norte da ilha. A Ribeira Brava era, ao mesmo tempo, um lugar de passagem dos que cruzavam a ilha pela costa, daqueles que iam para do Sul para o Norte, e ainda daqueles que cá chegavam de barco e seguiam o restante a pé. Assim o porto tornou-se o ponto fulcral dessa comunicação.
