Citadel of the Sea
Enjoy a spectacular hike
at the north end of Lincoln City. The route passes two very popular
viewpoints: The Knoll and The Thumb, aka God's
Thumb. Both of these sites have incredible views on clear days.
This was formerly an
excellent loop hike, but unfortunately the northwest trailhead on Logan Road is
now closed to hikers. It is now an out-and-back hike.
The trailhead and very
limited parking are on Port Drive at N 45 00.837 W 124 00.232 (saved as a
waypoint for this cache). If you are unable to find parking here, consider
parking at Road's End State Park and walking up to the trailhead.
Please DO NOT take the very
steep shortcut up from the main trail to the Knoll. It is very slippery
and hikers are damaging the hillside. Instead, just continue up the trail
the easy way. Thanks!
I have hiked extensively
in Oregon, Washington and Utah, and if forced to pick a favorite hike, it would
be this one (closely followed by
Cape Falcon,
Saddle
Mountain and
Kessler
Peak).
Caution: Areas of this hike near The Thumb have extreme dropoffs
and fatalities have occurred here. Be sure to keep children and pets under
control.
The photo below gives an
indication of the hike. From the left, the first summit is Cascade Head in the
distance. The black line in the photo is an antenna on the beach and not
a pointer! The next summit to the right is The Thumb. It
may look formidably steep, but is actually not a technical climb at all, but
just a steep, grassy hill.
At the far right
in the photo is the grassy summit of The Knoll and the location of
this cache.
A zoom shot of The Thumb (the dark line is an antenna on the beach
and is pointing to Cascade Head in the distance):
Your first cache is near the parking area:

Continue on to The Thumb. For safety reasons, the summit
cache was archived some time ago:
Thumbs Up!
If you are confident in your ability and safety, by all means head on up -
the view is spectacular! Be sure to keep
children under control and dogs leashed!
Enjoy a well-earned
dinner in Lincoln City!
