ROUTE OF THE HIAWATHA, THE "CROWN JEWEL" OF RAIL-TO-TRAIL ADVENTURES
The Route of the Hiawatha mountain bike or hike trail is 15 miles long with 10 train tunnels and 7 sky-high trestles. The ride starts with a trip through the 1.661 mile long St. Paul Pass Tunnel, also known as the Taft Tunnel. It is a highlight of the trail that follows the crest of the Bitterroot Mountains near Lookout Pass Ski Area. The trail is open 8:30 AM to 5 PM (PDT) daily starting May 22 through September 20, 2020.

Bike helmets and good lights are REQUIRED. There is a fee if you ride the trail. You can ride the trail down and ride a bus back up. Don't try it in reverse, as we once did, because the bus doesn't start that early. Some people ride both ways.
Trail passes, shuttle tickets and mountain bike rentals with lights are available at the nearby ski area. Take Exit 0, at the Idaho-Montana state line. The start of the Hiawatha is a short 7 mile drive from Lookout Pass. Lookout Pass is located just 12 miles east of historic Wallace, Idaho.
Cache container is a med lock & lock. It is not on the trail, so there is no fee to find the cache. Coords may be jumpy, as it is in a grove of trees. Enjoy the beautiful drive up the creek canyon. I placed the cache at the top, because I myself was enjoying the drive so much! It is about 1/4 mile from the trailhead parking area.
