We are taking advantage of a very low tide, -0.17, to visit the wreck site of the SS Denham which sunk in 1946. We will be following the tide out to arrive at the wreck site before the tide turns.
Just less than a year after the end of World War II the 103-ton survey vessel struck a German mine that was still hidden in the waters off New Brighton, despite the bay having been swept for such devices.
The terrible explosion tore the vessel apart, killing eight members of the crew and left only one survivor who was thrown unconscious into the water by the force of the blast.
The walk to the wreck is about a mile across sand, mud and pools of water so please wear appropriate footwear and dress according to conditions.
In the unlikely event of extreme adverse weather conditions this event will be cancelled.
As with all geocaching activities you attend this event at your own risk
