Ella Fitzgerald often referred to as "The Queen of Jazz,"  "The First Lady of Song" and "Lady Ella" had a musical career spanning over 60 years. She was a jazz master renown for her three-octave vocal range, pure tone and scat singing that resembled horn-like improvisations. Ella Fitzgerald sold over 40 million records and won 13 Grammy Awards.

Ella Fitzgerald's "Air Mail Special" performances are legendary examples of her virtuoso scat singing. 

Scat = form of vocal jazz improvisation that uses wordless, nonsense syllables (e.g. "doo-bee-doo-dah") instead of lyrics to create melodic, instrumental-style solos.
