Júlio Resende (Duet with Amália Rodrigues)

Júlio Resende is a Portuguese pianist and composer.  He is one of the most international Portuguese musicians and has released eleven albums as of 2026.  He began his musical career in jazz and is known for pioneering the Fado-Jazz fusion.

In 2013, his album entitled Amália por Júlio Resende was released as a tribute to the great Amália Rodrigues, the “Queen of Fado.”  Based on some of the most popular themes of Amália Rodrigues, Júlio Resende presented a new challenge of bringing fado to the piano.   He masterfully translates the “saudade” (intense longing) of Amália Rodrigues’ repertoire into solo jazz piano.  It’s widely celebrated for its improvisational beauty.

The album, edited by Valentim de Carvalho, was unanimously acclaimed by all Portuguese music critics and received CHOC DISC (5 Stars) by the prestigious French magazine CLASSICA, which classifies the best musicians and instrumentalists in the world.

One of his most popular interpretations is “Medo”, a duet with Amália.  This is the first time in history that a musician was allowed to play with a vintage recording of the Queen of Fado.
