History of Merlin
Born of a human mother and some elfin other-worldly father,
Merlin stands as one of the most famous figures in the Legends of King
Arthur. He was also speculated to be the reincarnation of Taliesin, a
famous bard in Britain’s history, or at least existed within the same time
frame. Even Stonehenge was thought to have been built by Merlin in some stories.
In any case, his knowledge of nature, magic, herbs, and astronomy labeled Merlin
as seer, druid, wizard, and shape-shifter.
It was Merlin who aided Uther
in his rule in King, and in turn helped Arthur when he claimed the throne. It
was said Merlin could call forth great clouds and winds, cast enchantments and
illusions, and speak to the faerie folk. It was he who brought Arthur to the
Lady of the Lake to claim Excalibur
and even he who helped build Camelot. Some even say he helped fashion the Round
Table. It was even his own magic that would eventually lead to his departure
from this mortal world, tricked by Vivien after revealing to her a powerful
charm spell. Legend speaks of Merlin trapped in an illusionary castle high in
the clouds, others tell of him asleep within a large tree. As such, Merlin
disappeared from Arthur’s life. No longer able to guide him, the days of King
Arthur would eventually fall to ruin and sorrow…
