A Serra da Lousã constitui a extremidade sudoeste da Cordilheira Central. Tem uma altitude de 1204 metros (Altar do Trevim), é fundamentalmente xistosa e precâmbrica; as suas águas lançam-se para o rio Zêzere.
O actual coberto vegetal pouco terá a ver com o que se supõe ter sido o seu revestimento florestal natural, que seria constituída por: azereiro, azevinho, feto-real, folhado, hera, loendro, loureiro, medronheiro. Contudo, alguns destes elementos subsistem na serra da Lousã.
Foi a partir do século XV que se terá iniciado uma actividade humana mais intensa, em particular de pastoreio.
Durante os séculos assistiu-se a algum grau de desertificação, e existe proliferação de algumas espécies exóticas (eucalipto, acácias), para além de pinheiros. Apesar disso a Serra da Lousã tem vastas áreas de floresta, onde é possível desfrutar da natureza. Tem também, na Senhora da Piedade, uma área de lazer com piscinas naturais.
Terão sido os romanos os primeiros a ocupar esta zona. A origem dos nove lugares da serra – Silveira de Cima, Silveira de Baixo, Cerdeira, Candal, Vaqueirinho, Catarredor, Chiqueiro, Casal Novo, Talasnal – permanece ainda um mistério. Datará de 1679 a primeira referência a estes povoados. Actualmente várias destas aldeias foram abandonadas.
Existe uma rede de percursos pedestres (e 3 rodoviários), que foram marcados na década de 90 do século passado, pela Quercus (associação de protecção da Natureza). Poder-se-á munir do seu guia (à venda no Turismo da Lousã) e/ou adquirir o mapa do Instituto Cartográfico do exército, série M888, carta número 252.

Serra da Lousã is the south-western tip of the Central Mountain range of Portugal. Its highest peak (Altar do Trevim) reaches 1204 m. It is a pre-Cambrian mountain, and geologically is made mainly of schist; its rivers drain to the Zêzere river.
The flora of Serra da Lousã has changed throughout times, and nowadays is very different from the original one. It had holly, ferns, ivy, oleander, laurel and arbutus. Anyway, in some areas we can still find some these species.
Human settlement of the Serra begun in the XV century, and sheep farming was one of the main activities.
During centuries we saw some degree of flora desertification, and nowadays we see a proliferation of exotic species, like the eucalyptus, acacia and pine trees. Despite this, Serra da Lousã remains a huge forest area were you can enjoy nature. At Senhora da Piedade you have a natural swimming pool.
Romans are thought to be the first settlers of the valley. The origin of the 9 villages of the Serra - Silveira de Cima, Silveira de Baixo, Cerdeira, Candal, Vaqueirinho, Catarredor, Chiqueiro, Casal Novo, Talasnal – remains a mystery. The first known reference was made about 1679. Nowadays some of the villages were abandoned. There is a network of pedestrian walks (and 3 for car), that were designed in the early 90’s, by Quercus (an environment organization). You can buy the guide to these walks at the Tourist Office in Lousã, and/or buy a Militar map (series M888, number 252).
CACHE
Para atingir a cache irá percorrer parcialmente um dos percursos pedestres referidos. Se o fizer na totalidade andará cerca de 5 km. Do local de estacionamento até à cache são cerca de 1.4 Km. Em alternativa poderá atingir a cache em bicicleta de montanha.
Na vila da Lousã (de Coimbra seguir na N17 e N236) procure indicações para as Aldeias Serranas. Dirija-se até 40N 06.242, 008W 15.124, e corte à esquerda, seguindo indicação de Hortas e Aldeias Serranas. Segue-se a subida em antiga estrada de pavimentada, acessível a um carro tradicional.
Após cerca de 6 Km, aparecerá uma tabuleta a indicar “Terreiro das Bruxas” (40N 04.893, 008W 14.642). Estacione aqui. A caminhada começa.
Siga até ao Terreiro das Bruxas e suba em direcção SSW até atingir o waypoint (40N 04.627, 008W 14.637).
Aí corte à direita (SW), ao longo de um caminho plano, até atingir as coordenadas da cache.
Poderá regressar pelo mesmo caminho, ou fazer o trajecto pelos seguintes waypoints: 40N 04.682, 008W 15.308 – virar à direita. 40N 04.541, 008W 15.170, e seguir pelo caminho até ao ponto de partida.
CACHE
To reach the cache you need to follow one of the walks I mentioned. If you complete it you will walk about 5 km. The distance from the park to the cache is about 1.4 km. You can reach the cache walking or in a mountain bike.
At Lousã (from Coimbra catch N17 and then N236) follow the signs to “Aldeias Serranas”. Go to 40N 06.242, 008W 15.124, and turn left (south), to an old paved road (signs Hortas and Aldeias Serranas). This road is suitable for a standard 2 wheel drive car.
After about 6 km, park your car at 40N 04.893, 008W 14.642, where there is a sign to “Terreiro das Bruxas”.
Go to Terreiro das Bruxas and turn SSW until you reach the waypoint 40N 04.627, 008W 14.637.
Turn right (SW), and walk in a road until you reach the cache coordinates.
You can come back by the same way, or make the full walk passing by the following waypoints: 40N 04.682, 008W 15.308 – turn right. 40N 04.541, 008º 15.170, and then follow the road until you reach the place where you parked the car.
