About This Item

Shrieking for Freedom

“It is said the eagle was used as a national emblem because, at one of the first battles of the Revolution (which occurred early in the morning) the noise of the struggle awoke the sleeping eagles on the heights and they flew from their nests and circled about over the heads of the fighting men, all the while giving vent to their raucous cries. "They are shrieking for Freedom," said the patriots.” – From www.baldeagleinfo.com

This eagle would like to travel to locations of historic significance from the time of the American Revolution or caches near them. Spots like Independence Hall, Valley Forge, Mount Vernon, or Betsy Ross’s house are where he’d like to soar. Pictures of his travels are always welcome.

Since he is an eagle, let’s try to keep him soaring.

The Battle of the Brandwine was fought between Washington and Howe on Sept. 11, 1777. It was the largest battle of the Revolutionary War involving 10,600 US troops and 17,000 British troops and was fought over an area greater than 10 square miles. The battle involved several other famous names including Gen. Layfeyette, John Marshall (future Chief Justice), Lord Charles Cornwallis, and Wilhelm von Knyphaus
  • Capturing a Canon at the Brandywine Battlefield The British won the Battle of the Brandywine, resulting in the capture of Philadelphia, but Washington's Army inflicted heavy losses on the British and retreated in good order to fight again on another day.
