Show Low was named by the turn of card. Two early settlers, Corydon Cooley and Marion Clark, decided there wasn’t enough room for both of them in the community and agreed to let a game of cards decide who was to get the 100,000 acre ranch and who was to move on. The card game went on through the night and according to the story, Clark said to Cooley, “If you can show low, you win.” Cooley turned up the deuce of clubs and replied, “show low it is.” ♣️♣️

Welcome to the Arizona State Capitol Building in Phoenix. Arizona became a state in 1912. The building is made from materials indigenous to Arizona, including malapai, granite, and the copper dome. The design is optimized for the desert climate, with thick masonry walls that insulate the interior and round bullseye clerestory windows to let heat out of the legislative chambers. On top is a weather vane similar to the Winged Victory of Samothrace. 🌵

Welcome to Arizona and the Anthem Veterans Memorial. Stopped at the Salt Flats in Utah on my way to Salt Lake City. The salt flats are a remnant of the Pleistocene Lake Bonneville, which dried up. The lake was huge, filling much of the Great Basin. As the water continued to evaporate, salt deposits were left in many areas. It is an absolutely beautiful sight! 🧂
