The Sentier de Grande Randonée GR1 NC, or the Great Trekking Trail, is a (at present) seven stage hike across the lower half of New Caledonia. It begins at the abandoned forced labor mining town of Prony and proceeds north and west to end at the newer dam of Dumbea. You can read about the entire GR1, in English or French, right here.
Over the past several months, my daughter and I (and some friends) hiked the full length of the GR1. Initially, we skipped Stages 4 and 5 as Stage 4B provides a "shortcut" between Stages 3 and 6. But now, my friend Paul and I completed the two "skipped" stages. Here is the complete set of geocaches we placed on the GR1, a total of 10 (8 on the individual stages and one at the beginning and one at the end)

Due to logistics and the fact one cannot leave a vehicle at the Refuge between Stages 4 and 5, we elected to do Stages 4 and 5 consecutively - hiking the reverse of the intended direction, i.e., we went from west to east - thus starting at the end of Stage 5 and finishing at the beginning of Stage 4. Stage 5 is long - almost 18 km but there is a single hill to climb thus it is actually one of the easier stages. Stage 4 is much hillier, but somewhat shorter (about 14 km)
The refuge between Stages 5 and 4 - Refuge des Muletiers is very well maintained and we arrived to find it stacked with firewood and kindling. The geocache for this stage is placed at an open plateau with a fantastic view. We wrapped the geocache in a plastic bag to protect it from the elements. Au cours des derniers mois, ma fille et moi (et quelques amis) ont parcouru toute la longueur de l'GR1. Initialement, nous avons sauté stades 4 et 5 comme étape 4B fournit un «raccourci» entre les étapes 3 et 6. Mais maintenant, mon ami Paul et je terminé les deux "sauté" étapes. Voici l'ensemble des chasses au trésor, nous avons placé sur le GR1, un total de 10 (8 sur les étapes individuelles et une au début et l'autre à la fin).

A la fin de GR1.
En raison de la logistique et le fait qu'on ne peut pas laisser un véhicule au Refuge entre les étapes 4 et 5, nous avons choisi de faire Étapes 4 et 5 consécutivement - randonnée l'inverse de la direction prévue, à savoir, nous sommes allés de l'ouest à l'est - à commencer ainsi à la fin de l'étape 5 et de finition au début de l'étape 4. Etape 5 est longue - près de 18 km, mais il ya une seule colline pour grimper ainsi il est effectivement l'une des étapes les plus faciles. Etape 4 est beaucoup plus accidenté, mais un peu plus courte (environ 14 km)
Le refuge entre les étapes 5 et 4 - Refuge des Muletiers est très bien entretenu et nous sommes arrivés à trouver empilée avec du bois et du bois d'allumage. La géocache pour cette étape est placé à un plateau ouvert avec une vue fantastique. Nous avons terminé la géocache dans un sac plastique pour le protéger contre les éléments.
