This Cache can be collected as
an individual multi cache or as part of the circular Wellow Wood
Nature trail series. While the walk is very pleasant it can also
get very muddy after rain so walking boots or even Wellingtons are
recommended. And don’t forget to have a big breakfast
(see
GC1XTYN).
Quite interesting facts:
The wood sits on a steep scarp slope, which was no good
for food production. It is thought that the origins of this ancient
woodland go back to medieval times at least, for its boundary is
marked in places by a deep ‘wood bank’. These were
often constructed around deer parks to prevent the animals
escaping. The boundary of the wood with Cocking Moor Lane shows
this particularly well. Subsequently Wellow Park was managed by the
Rufford estate for the production of timber and firewood. Nowadays
the wood is home to wild red deer, as well as several Muntjac deer
unfortunately, together with foxes and badgers. It is actually the
largest ash-dominated wood in
Nottinghamshire, and is wholly owned by the Forestry
Commission.
Walking directions:
Continue down the path into the wood with the open field
to your left and the wood banking up to your right. It is around
here that, when planting the caches I spotted a fox happily
wondering around oblivious to my presence. I stopped in my tracks
and watched for 2/3 minutes before she saw me and scurried off into
the field. Your GPS should soon be picking up “Wellow nature
trail #02”. This is the first Multi cache containing the
co-ordinates for a close by additional cache where you can sign the
log and exchange goodies. You might have to back track slightly due
to me having to relocate the cache. Hopefully you have solved your
first couple of clues now and are getting the idea so it’s
time to make the hides a little more interesting.
Bonus Cache:
