Helmets
1.
One crash kills most helmets. That Styrofoam
layer between the shell and your head is your best friend. The expanded
polystyrene (Styrofoam) crushes under impact to give your head approximately
6/100ths of a second extra stopping time. That 6/100ths of a second can be the
difference between you getting back up and riding off and having to relearn the
alphabet. The foam also distributes the point of impact over a larger area.
2.
Proper Fit
Your helmet should neither dig into your
scalp nor flop around. The better the fit the more protection you will have. To
ensure proper adjustment start with the interior pads. Most are held in place
with adhesive or hook and loop strips, which can be added or removed to
customize fit or to wash when they get dirty. Next adjust the straps so that
each V-buckle is positioned right below your ears, then cinch the main buckle so
two fingers barely fit between your chin and the strap. To make sure the helmet
is fitting correctly push the front of your helmet up. If it moves more than 1
inch, tighten the chin straps. Repeat with the back adjustment.

The nerd coin went to a Flash Mob event in Wausau with us today. We thought about juggling the nerd with a couple of other geocoins, but it stayed safe in a pocket while we threw some other stuff around in the park.

Can't remember if the nerd coin has ever been to Wausau, but it has now! Took it up the elevator with us to the top floor of a parking ramp to find this cache, and in addition to the smiley here, we got some great views of the city and the surrounding area.

The Big Red Badgers go to Pasadena, and the little teal nerd coin visits a cache. Thought the nerd would like to find a cache back in Wisconsin after the long journey it just went on, and what says "Wisconsin" better than Bucky?

Helmets will give most people "bad hair days", but we don't know why this cache here has that name. We do know that is located about a block and a half from where Mr. Sandlanders grew up, and it's also the location where the two of us came for ice cream on our first date after a round of mini-golf with the two friends who introduced us to each other. The nerd coin was hoping to pose by some historical marker that was surely placed to commemorate that day in history, but it had to settle for a pic by the building and sign. The place wasn't even open this early in the morning today! 😡 😉 😎

The nerd coin has now officially visited Mr. Sandlanders' home town. While the coin didn't go out with us last night when we had pizza with friends, it had waffles in the motel with us this morning, and it is now loaded up and ready to be back in Wisconsin later today.

The nerd coin distracted us as we came to the park road, so we zipped right on by it and headed back across the Mississippi River into Missouri again. Luckily, we were able to turn around quickly and cross the river right back in to Illinois. It was neat to stand at the southern tip of Illinois with the Ohio River to our left and the Mississippi River to our right. Barges were going by on the rivers during our visit here.

This cache was a big ammo can hidden on the grounds of the New Madrid historical society museum, and it's not far from the Mississippi River. Lots of information to be gathered from the cache and in the museum. Don't think the nerd coin has to worry much about earthquakes in Wisconsin, but you never know where our travels will take it! (Remember Alaska last summer?)

Of course we know who caused the New Madrid earthquake! It was the nerd coin! The nerd coin is always causing trouble! 😈 Helmets on and take cover when the ground starts to shake!

Back in Mississippi, we thought we'd take the nerd coin to "church". This would be our last find in the state on this trip.

The nerd coin has been to the northwest corner of Arkansas, and now at this cache it visited the southeast corner of Arkansas. Still a lot of state left in between.
