Geocache Description:

Lumsdaine Shore was once the haunt of smugglers. This remote part of the Berwickshire coast is truly spectacular. This cache should be a challenge as it lies at the foot of some of the highest cliffs on the east coast.

Description

Lumsdaine Shore is a stoney beach located at the foot of some of the highest cliffs on the East coast. Over 150 years ago the fishermen who once launched their small boats from the beach and the farmers who gathered seaweed with which to lime their land constructed a cart track. The track remains passable and will allow you to easily descend the 400 feet to the beach in a series of switchbacks. The path commences at N 55° 55.438 W 02° 12.210.

Lumsdaine Shore was also once the haunt of smugglers. Ships would lay along side the rocks and land their illicit cargo of untaxed contraband. The cliffs are dotted with caves where once the smugglers may have stored casks of tobacco and barrels of port.

You can start your walk to the cache from several places, Dowlaw Farm, Lumsdaine Farm, or St. Abbs Head. You can then walk along the cliff tops, before descending to the beach. Lumdaine Farm is the closest access point to the cache, but please park sensibly and if possible ask permission before leaving your car. There is a car park at Dowlaw Farm and above Petticowick at St. Abbs Head.

When you leave the cache please make sure that it is still well concealed below the stone.

Warning

The Lumsdaine Shore cache is located at the foot of a 400 feet high cliff, you will not get a mobile telephone reception once you begin descending this cliff, therefore please tell someone where you are going. Lumdaine Shore is very remote and you'll be lucky if anyone is there for several days at a time. If you do visit the cache site as part of a group please stay close together as you descend the cliff. There are large stones and scree which you could easily dislodge and as these stones roll to the bottom of the cliff they could kill a member of your walking party, if they are in the way.

Contents

You'll have to visit the cache to find out what's inside. Suffice to say the content is varied and consists of quality items, so bring some nice things to exchange.
