This cache is on the banks of the Montgomery Canal, which was built in the 1790s. The canal's main purpose was to carry limestone, used for agricultural purposes. It remained profitable until the 1920s. In 1936, a breach occurred near Frankton Junction and the decision was taken to abandon the canal. In recent years enthusiasts have been steadily restoring the it for use by pleasure boaters.
