The 37th quilt block in the Clinton County Barn Quilt Trail is the “Star and Cross” design found on the red barn located at 2896 Antioch Road. The farm is owned by Bob Kirk and has been the home for him, his wife Jacque and their seven children since 1996.

The federal-style farm house and barn was purchased from Jeanette Price. Upon researching her new home, Jacque discovered it was built with an extraordinary family history.

John and Susannah Basehore moved to Clinton County in 1814 and raised their seven children there. The story is told that Mr. Basehore willed off his land to each of his children and built homes in the New Antioch area for his four sons and youngest daughter. The Kirks purchased the c. 1835 home of Mary “Polly” Basehore McWilliams. For many years the location was known as the “Halfway House” because it was half way between New Antioch and the Fairview Friends Church. The home sits quite close to the road and was frequented by travelers watering their horses and visiting with Mrs. McWilliams on her front porch.

Bob and Jacque enjoyed restoring their home back to its c. 1835 décor. Jacque had a retail business in the barn, Valley View Country Gifts and Home Décor, and sold reproduction items she had come across during the restoration.

For years, she had wanted to paint and sell barn quilts. When she heard of the Clinton County Barn Quilt Project, Jacque wanted to be an active participant. She had no problem deciding on The Star and Cross pattern. The quilt block is affectionately called Jacque’s block. She chose this design which combines the Star, representing our nation’s freedom, and the Cross symbolizing their faith.

Bob and Jacque understand what sacrifices it takes to have and enjoy this country’s freedom. Of their seven children, four have served in the military. Jacque carefully arranged the quilt colors to represent the different branches in which her children had served. Green signified Ben who served four years and Erynn, two years, in the Army National Guard. Blue represented Erynn who also served five years in the U.S. Navy and did two cruises to the Persian Gulf. Red and yellow were selected for Gabriel and Caleb, each having served four years in the U.S. Marine Corps, doing three tours to Iraq between them.
