McKinley
County
This cache is part of the New Mexico Challenge. One cache is hidden in each
of New Mexico's 33
counties.
Your mission, should you decide to accept it is
to find and log all 33 caches with a
photo of yourself at the cache site.
This Challange cache is easily
accessible from I-40 on County Road 400 which goes to Fort Wingate,
the village. CR 400 is paved and continues to the Cibola National
Forest where it becomes Forest Road 50. This is a very good gravel
road leading to Quaking Aspen and McGaffey campgrounds. The cache
is small about 2.5 times the size of a 35mm film cannister. It is
about one half mile from the nearest cache, which is Lewis the
Woodpecker, GCGF5Y.
We (Zuni Kid & Enabler) placed three new caches along this
road so a cacher can bag four within a few miles of I 40 on good
roads.
All the desert/forest caveats apply, like snakes etc.
This is beautiful ponderosa pine forest rolling hills with open
meadows country. FR 50 is good for several more miles but becomes
very primitive after a while. FR50 crosses the Zuni Mountains
ending on US 53 near El Morro.
