NCGO T-Shirt Challenge!

This is a challenge cache.  The posted coordinates are for the final cache, but the challenge must be completed before you can claim credit for the find.  The difficulty and terrain are for completing the challenge.  The final cache is 2.5/4.0 (more on that in another section).

For numbers, OzGuff's Century Challenge caches offer an excellent goal.  For traveling, seek DeLorme, County, 50 States, or 50 Capitols Challenge caches.  For a taste of everything, try the Fizzy / Well-Rounded Cacher Challenge.  Another fun goal can be accomplished with Geocaching From A to Z.  But what of finding quality caches?  Is there to be a cache for them?

The NC Geocachers Organization has a Greatest Hits list, comprised of the best North Carolina has to offer.  As of this caches creation, there are fourteen different categories for this caches, including best hikes, epic adventures, fun for kids, just plain fun, paddle, and virtual caches.  During fall 2008, a t-shirt was created using some of the caches names written in one of four colors and arranged in the shape of the state.


The Challenge
Simply put, your challenge is to find all caches in one color group: blue, green, orange, or red.  There are an average of 33 caches per color group and seem to be evenly dispersed across the state.

While you must find all caches in one color group, what happens if a cache is archived?  You may replace it with any cache on the NCGOs Greatest Hits list that is not on the t-shirt (e.g. not in another color group).  The same goes for up to two other caches in your color group.  Use your two freebees as you see fit: replace a cache that is temporary unavailable, guard against a DNF, or avoid a cache that would require a lot of work.  The choice is yours.  If you were the one who created a cache in a color group, count the cache as found.  If you placed a cache elsewhere on the Greatest Hits list, you may mark that cache as found.  Consider this a thank you for placing a quality cache.  If you have adopted a cache on the list, you may not use it; treat it as archived and follow those rules.

Special Rule: Some caches are finals for an entire series of caches spread over too wide a region. For GeoMonopoly, GeoClue, 101 Dalmatians, and Good For What Ales You, show you have completed at least fifteen.

Rule adjustment (March 2018): If a cache is archived, skip it. You do not have to replace it with another cache. At this time, the blue and orange groups have 17 caches, green 18 caches, and red 14 caches. If you found an archived cache, you do not get to use it as a freebee for a color group. This adjustment now halves the required caches. When a color group has 5-10 active caches, you only get one freebee. When a color group has 5 active caches or less, you only get a freebee for caches that need maintenance. You may substitute caches that need maintenance with a found archived cache on that list, if you wish.


The Cache and Logging
The final cache is hidden in a section of Uwharrie.  Park close to N 35 35.401 / W 79 56.919.  From there, it is a 3.9 mile hike to the cache site.  There may be a shortcut to trim more than a mile from your journey, but I did not try that particular trail.  Most of the journey is via trail with the final 0.6 - 0.7 miles off trail, going up and down 100+ foot hills.  Within a hundred yards of this cache is the posted boundary for this section of Uwharrie, offering a terriffic view for the tired hiker.  It is my hope this cache appeals to the terrain quality standards set by other NCGO Greatest Hits caches.  I will post pictures of the area later on.  The container is ammo can goodness.

Inside the cache, you'll find a log book, four colored Sharpie markers, and an NCGO t-shirt.  These items are not for trade (and, in fact, there's very little room for trade items inside).  In addition to signing and writing in the log book (bring your own pen), you must autograph the t-shirt in the same color ink as the color group you completed and take a picture of you and the t-shirt, included with your log.  You do not have to wear the t-shirt!  I'd suggest bringing a backup colored Sharpie with you just in case the one in the cache dries out or freezes.  When logging your cache online, please cite which color group you completed, which caches you replaced, and the freebees you used.

Since were aiming for quality experiences, you may log one find per color group you complete.  You may not count freebees you use for one color group as part of another.
