CSI-1: A Stream Runs Through It Mystery Cache

This cache has been archived.

MadMin: I attempted to contact the owner of CSI-1: A Stream Runs Through It to find out about the status of this cache on August 31, 2009. I have received no response from the owner on the cache page or via email. Because of that I'm afraid I have to archive this cache.

I will be more than happy to review this cache again and (hopefully) reinstate it once you have corrected any issues with the cache. please contact me via ma.reviewer@gmail.com to do so.

Please note that unarchiving a cache page places it through the same review process as a newly proposed cache, using the cache placement guidelines currently in effect.

Geocache Description:

About the CSI Series

The CSI series is a collection of caches that derive their name from the popular television program in which the lead character has often been heard to say, “Follow the evidence.” Unlike a more traditional mystery cache in which a puzzle must be solved to determine the coordinates of the cache, the CSI series offers something different. Instead of conquering a puzzle, you must follow the evidence to each CSI container.

Sources of evidence will include information provided with the cache page instructions, a collection of bulk evidence provided on a single sheet inside the CSI-1 container, individual clues placed inside each CSI cache, and selected pictures of the various CSI sites. In addition, as the series evolves, some CSI sleuths may intentionally or inadvertently leave pieces of evidence with their online logs. This could include logs posted on a CSI cache page or logs posted for other caches near a CSI site.

Regardless of where the information may come from, your task is to examine the available clues, and if necessary, conduct additional research online and/or in the field, then locate each container.

Though it may not seem so at first glance, each CSI cache page contains sufficient evidence to lead you to every CSI container, though in some cases the challenge will be quite significant without benefit of additional clues. However, the bulk evidence hidden inside CSI-1 should prove quite valuable as should the individual clues hidden in each CSI cache and the "picture evidence" available below.

The CSI-10 cache has been set up differently from the others in that you must obtain clues placed in all of the other nine CSI caches to determine the location of CSI-10 stage one.

All caches have been placed no more than two miles from the posted coordinates. The estimated difficulty ratings for each cache reflect the challenge posed by the evidence, and do not reflect the difficulty of the hides which are all modest to easy. If sleuths find one or more caches to be more difficult than expected, the CSI lab reserves the right to provide more evidence as needed, with hopes of achieving a respectable graduation rate by the end of the year.

All sleuths should be aware that, in some cases, it may not be necessary or it may not initially be possible to determine the precise coordinates of a particular CSI cache before you enter the woods and begin your search. As a result, you may need to employ your GPS in new ways, sometimes using it as a tool to get you close and then using other senses and skills to bag your prey. In this regard, “hard evidence” should always be given more weight than GPS technology.

The official coordinates for each CSI location are provided on the “What’s This” sheet inside each CSI cache. Whether you have calculated coordinates in advance or not, make sure you mark and save the precise latitude and longitude for each CSI cache that you find.

Finally, when examining the evidence, keep the following in mind. Unless otherwise stated on a CSI cache page, the cache locations were all plotted in January and February of 2007. The clues were all written before March 31, 2007. Distance and bearing calculations were made using Geocalc high accuracy method. All distances provided are one-way by air, unless otherwise stated.

Geocalc, Google.com and Google Earth are the sleuth's primary tools. Both Geocalc and Google Earth can be downloaded for free. If you are unfamiliar with either program, send me an email and I’ll help get you started.

The CSI Travel Bug

At some point after the series is published and FTFs are claimed on all CSI caches, the CSI Travel Bug will be released. Finding and moving this bug will provide sleuths with access to new clues that will be changed on a regular basis. (visit link)

The CSI Bug will be released at the same time as “CSI-Epilogue: The Sleuth’s Handbook,” a late edition to the CSI series due for release sometime in the summer of 2007. The “Sleuth’s Handbook” contains additional information that should prove helpful for anyone interested in completing the CSI series.

The CSI Travel Bug holds coordinates to a micro that begins a multi-stage hunt to the CSI-Epilogue cache.

The CSI Lab also reserves the right to place short-term bonus clues in the CSI Travel Bug to assist students with a designated CSI cache. When available, bonus clues will offer specific new evidence for one CSI cache. This evidence will remain with the bug for an unknown period of time before being removed.

If you are interested in completing the series, keep this bug on you watchlist for updates on new “evidence” as it becomes available. A note will be posted on the CSI Travel Bug page whenever a bonus clue is added or taken away from the bug.

Posting pictures / Adding evidence

CSI sleuths are welcome to submit pictures and/or logs that may be entered as evidence, but are asked to follow a few rules.

Please make cryptic any evidence provided in written logs or make such logs only minimally helpful. Keep in mind the "evidence" will be accumulating over time, making the task easier for sleuths who tackle this series later. Let's not make it too easy. Also, please do not submit any false or misleading information.

The CSI series will take you to, and past, some pretty nice sights, and pictures are strongly encouraged and would be greatly appreciated. Just as with written logs, please exercise caution when posting pictures to be sure they do not reveal too much.

CSI-1: A Stream Runs Through It

This cache contains a clue sheet with pieces of evidence that will help you locate the other caches in the CSI series. You could possibly locate some or all of the CSI caches without these clues but your challenge in doing so will be greater.

Unfortunately, the CSI lab was shorthanded when processing this information and no orderly system was used to file the evidence, so it won't initially be clear which pieces of information apply to which CSI cache. Consequently, you must first put the evidence in proper context in order to make best use of it.

Basic Data:

Designated Parking: Bearing of 93.766 degrees to cache
Size: Flip top micro
Trails: Suitable for hiking only
Distance from parking: About an eighth of a mile

This is a two-stage hunt located on state forest land. Considering the area they traverse, it is unfortunate the trails do not appear on the area's official trail map posted online.

The “basic data” above applies only to stage one, a short hike with definite scenic appeal to a spot along a stream. There is very limited parking on the side of the road by a narrow trailhead guarded by a large rock. The micro was placed just a few feet from the water and is knot hidden in a very tough spot.

Unless the area dries up substantially in the summer, the path from stage one to stage two cannot be hiked because a stream runs through it. Instead, you will need to return to your car for a short ride to a different trailhead that offers a clear path to the cache which was also placed in view of water.
