Here's Captain James Cook... and you have his "lucky rock"!

About This Item

This travel bug was launched in Spring 2017 when ScoutrP re-hid the "Captain Cook's Lookout Hide" (GCGNV9), one of the oldest caches in Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada, which is now maintained by ScoutrP and Cache the Bayman! (aka "CtB!").  The TB is a "lucky rock" - a rock which has at least one hole natually eroded through the rock, which was picked up in April 2017 by CtB! in Gillams, a small town on the Humber Arm, which Captain Cook here overlooks.  Lucky rocks were traditionally kept in the fore of the fishing boats of local fishermen, such as CtB!'s own grandfather's boat.

We hope that the re-launch of this cache with the launch of this new travel bug brings good caching karma to the cache, the bug, and now you!  This bug would like to travel the world's oceans.  Please post pics with your logs.  Whether you get this TB near the ocean or otherwise, we wish all the best to you on your geocaching journeys.

Cheers,

CtB! and ScoutrP

Goodbye Captain Cook’s Lucky Rock, i’m A bit alarmed you have not been logged yet. This was an excellent cache and no way it could have been muggles. Had a great City to Surf run this morning, lots of fun. Took you out for a quick geocache to stretch out my legs. Glorious day in Sydney yet again. I hope you get logged. Good luck! 🏃🏼‍♀️🏃🏻‍♂️

It’s hard to beat these views. Sydney is gorgeous and the Opera House is a work of art. Heading back to the hotel for a quiet night in. 😉

Well I did take you home to Melbourne but quickly put you back on another plane to Sydney. I’ve come here to run the City to Surf fun run, 14km, Sydney to Bondi Beach, 80,000 enterants. Today is just for wandering the streets of Sydney and taking you to a seafood picnic near the Sydney Fish Market. 🐟

Day 17 of the Larapinta hike and the final day. Last night, we camped at Wallaby Gap and shared the site with two other hikers on their first day of the Larapinta who did not know how to pitch their tent or start their stove. I hope they survive! They were pretty exhaused just with the walk from Alice Springs. Finished the hike and celebrated with lunch at the Telegraph Station. What a fabulous hike. Then walked to our hotel in Alice Springs. Back home tomorrow. 🏆

Day 16 of the Larapinta. Last night we camped off the trail someway to have one last night of guaranteed solitude. Today, you arrived at Simpson’s Gap. It is on the tourist trail and so has flushing toilets and rubbish bins. Luxury for through hikers! I’ve been to Simpson’s Gap several times but it’s always lovely. I remember coming here with my grandpa just before he died. I like walking where he walked. And we saw a rock wallaby. Then it was time to keep walking.... 👣

Battled the wind and made it to Standley Chasm where there is a cafe. There are also about 12 other tents on a tiny campground, a bit of a shock after so much time without other people. The wind gusts were strong all day and there was even enough rain to send us into our tent for dinner. 🌧

Day 13 of our Larapinta Hike. Last night, we camped on Brinkley Bluff after a tough slog up. We had it all to ourselves so it was quite magical. The wind came up this morning and was really gusting as we came through the pass to this cache. 💨

Day 11 of the Larapinta. Yesterday was a hike through the dry Alice Valley. We were hoping to do the 30 odd kms in one day to avoid hauling overnight water but unfortunately CuteOtter left her jacket at a rest stop which required a nearly 6km return backtrack for two of the family (I was all for sending her back by herself but apparently child services wouldn’t look favourably on losing your child in the desert). I confess to finding this cache because I didn’t remember to look for it. After days of solitude, it was a shock to find a commercial hiking company setting up for their 22 clients. They had taken over everything. That’s a bit over the top. Instead, we continued on and had a dip at Hugh Gorge waterhole then camped in seclusion a bit further on. 🏊‍♀️

Day 8 of our Larapinta hike. You’ve enjoyed some fabulous scenery along the way here. This cache is on Counts Point, more great views. Some other hiker stole the biscuits from one of our packs here. They left the outer wrapper neatly folded though. Incredible. Anyway, next it’s onto Serpentine Gorge. 🍪
