The Winkle Farm is located at 3308 Martinsville Road, near the covered bridge, and is the 48th barn along the Clinton County Barn Quilt Trail. The north side of the barn displays the quilt block “Optical Illusion” painted in FFA colors of national blue and corn gold. It proudly proclaims Ed’s 32-year career in educating young people about the function and value of agriculture in our world.

Ed and LuAnn Winkle faced a difficult decision when they purchased their dream farmstead from Phillip and Betty Cochran in 2004: What to do with the post and beam barn that was a part of the original homestead dating to the 1880s? It was in serious disrepair and the cost to restore it was a concern, but the Winkles believed the barn had character and that it was too special to be razed. So they hired “The Barn Man,” Jim Telenko, from Barnum, Minn., to restore the old barn.

Ed, a retired FFA teacher and county extension agent, said, “It took Jim most of the summer to straighten and repair the barn. I recall neighbors and friends coming by every day to watch the progress and to thank us for saving it.” Today, the barn stands straight and strong.

“‘Optical Illusion’ is the perfect pattern to describe our philosophy of life and farming,” said LuAnn. “Things are not always as they seem. There is hidden potential in everything and everyone we encounter. Our barn had such hidden potential and we are so glad we preserved this small part of Clinton County history.”

The Hopkins sisters, Diane Murphy, Cindy Beck nd Terese Hamilton chose to sponsor this barn quilt due to a family connection to the previous owners, Phil and Betty Cochran. They appreciate the care that Ed and LuAnn are taking of this piece of family history, they said.
