With this edition of Geocache of the Week, we are taking a step into the extreme side of geocaching and throwing it back to one of our earliest Geocaches of the Week — Near the Top of Europe (GC2BVRY)! After all, what is better than summiting the highest mountain in the Alps AND logging a 5/5 find?

Boasting an altitude of 15,774 ft (4,808 m), Mont Blanc is a top destination for alpinists around the world. A climbing expedition to one of the highest mountain peaks on the planet requires a significant amount of planning and physical preparation. Much like geocaching, you need to plan your transportation, your route, your team, and your gear.

The snow crunches beneath your boots and the cold brisk air fills your lungs as you embark on your adventure up the mountain. For many, the ascent up the mountain requires periods of acclimation—getting your body accustomed to the high altitudes—a process that may require a night or two at various points along the route. It’s all part of the fun to camp out in wooden cabins with your fellow mountain climbing geocachers.

Upgrade your boots with crampons to better grip the ice and snow as you climb higher. This fashionable addition signifies your progress as you get closer and closer to the summit—and the cache. Like geocaching, mountain climbing is a sport where the journey itself is often just as, if not more, rewarding than the completion itself. Finally, after hours, if not days, of navigation up the snowy peak, you see the summit. What looked like a world away is now almost within reach.

Now, on the summit, your journey isn’t over; it’s time to look for the cache! But this Traditional Cache is tucked somewhere among the rocky ridgeline near the summit of Mont Blanc, making the summit that much sweeter.

After you sign your name on the log and replace the cache, you are ready to embark on the second part of your journey—descending the mountain. Take in all the sights around you one last time before you make your trip home.

As you ride the wave of success, the climb down feels like a piece of cake. Plus, you might get to pet some friendly alpine dogs along the way.
