Freedom – Geocache of the Week
What do saving the world from a giant asteroid and geocaching have in common?
Satellites, mental challenges, adventures that are out of this world!
In its former life, this cache container was created as a model of a NASA space shuttle. Cache owner, Marcupio, was tasked with designing the prototypes of several props for the 1998 blockbuster film Armageddon, including the fictional spaceship, Freedom.

In this cheesy sci-fi adventure, a group of ragtag heroes must save the world from a giant asteroid by flying the shuttle, Freedom, to the surface of the asteroid and detonating a bomb to break it apart, saving planet Earth from destruction.
Marcupio’s first design was rejected by the movie production team. But as Bruce Willis’ character, Harry Stamper, says: “You gotta have some kind of backup plan, right?” This resourceful cache owner decided to repurpose it into a geocache!

And what a geocache! This is one of those large caches that makes the argument for an extra-large size category. It is not quite “the size of Texas,” but this monster cache certainly earns the title of “Armadillo,” according to experts at “downtown NASA.”

But enough movie quotes; this cache is huge! Made from a recycled water heater, this cache is over 4 feet (1.2 meters) long and weighs over 150 pounds (68 kg). As you might imagine, a cache of this magnitude holds plenty of SWAG and trackables. If that wasn’t impressive enough, Marcupio and their crew managed to haul the space shuttle several hundred feet up a steep, rocky hill to its final landing site.

Geocachers will have to embark on their own daring mission to claim a find on this cache. This is where those multi-million dollar satellites come in handy; navigating to the posted coordinates can be tricky in this terrain. Watch your step, or you might make a crash landing!
Once you safely touch down at GZ, you can breathe a sigh of relief, enjoy the view, and sign the log sheet—mission accomplished.
