Fortuna’s beacon – Geocache of the week
A story, a mystery, an adventure, and a masterpiece of craftsmanship, Fortuna’s Beacon (GCAK7BM) has it all.
This cache tells the tale of a brave soul named Fortuna, who found herself lost deep in the forest.
Surrounded by towering trees and tangled branches, she built a beacon to call for help, a signal of hope shining through the darkness.
But what did their signal mean? That is the key to finding this geocache.

The cache description begins with a beautifully written story about the lost Fortuna. To find the coordinates, you must solve the question of what the beacon signal represents. Those who can decrypt Fortuna’s message soon discover that the answer is universal.
Once the mystery is solved and the coordinates are retrieved, make your way to the cache. The forest path winds among tall trees and soft moss, leading to a large wooden box protected by a code lock.
Upon arriving at the cache, a new challenge emerges. Unlocking the cache.

Opening the wooden cache reveals a curious collection of tags labeled “short” and “long,” each written in a different language, a clever clue pointing to the “secret code.” A portrait of Samuel Morse himself seals the hint. Once the correct code, revealed through the story, is entered, the cache activates in an exciting way.

The flickering lights and rhythmic Morse signals recreate Fortuna’s call for help, transforming the find into a powerful display of storytelling and design.

This clever and beautiful creation is the handiwork and teamwork of a father-son duo; the son handles the electronics, while the dad focuses on the woodworking. Together, they create various clever, impressive geocaches such as GCAHPWM, GCAYGWX, GCAETYM, and GCACKKH.

Half of the geocachers who have found this geocache have given this one a Favorite point. Clearly a well-loved geocache.
Important to note is that you will need to bring a 9V battery to power the electronics. Without a strong/new crown, the door of the cache will not open. Be mindful that the cache might not function below -5°C, so plan your visit accordingly. The cache contains a guestbook and a pencil, as well as a place to put trinkets and other small items.

Fortuna’s Beacon is more than just a geocache; it’s an experience. It’s the kind of hide that reminds us why we love geocaching: the blend of exploration, creativity, and human connection that lights up even the darkest forest.
Do you have a favorite story-driven cache you think other geocachers should visit?
