Joey’s Cache — Geocache of the Week
- Location:
- New York, USA
- N 40° 43.557’ W 073° 25.854’
Geocaches are more than just containers; they’re about outdoor adventure, exploration, and community. Sometimes they’re even the gift that keeps on giving.
Attached to a fence in New York is a creative gadget geocache published by MoDaRiMa as a thank you to another geocacher. If you’re on the fence about which cache to try next, may we suggest Joey’s Cache (GC8Z57B)?
The first step to declaring this geocache a victory, also known as ‘found’, is ensuring you are at the correct GZ. The cache description warns geocachers not to end up on the wrong side of the fence, where there is nothing to find. If you’re on the parking lot side, you’re off to a great start.

At first glance, the box that protects this geocache looks ordinary, although it is more extraordinary than that! Upon opening the box, geocachers see five colored pegs, secured into place—red, orange, yellow, green, and blue.

The first step is to match the five color-matching cogwheels provided in the cache to the five colored pegs already secured in place. Each tooth of the cogwheel has a letter on it and one black dot. It’s important to align the black dots on each cogwheel with the dot on the peg to secure the starting alignment.

Next, geocachers must turn the wheels to spell out the name Joey. Each letter is associated with a corresponding number. Once Joey is spelled out, four numbers should be obtained, which geocachers then must enter into a combination lock holding the log sheet.
Once you’ve cracked Joey’s code and used it to release the final compartment, the geocache reveals itself, complete with the log sheet and lots of SWAG.

This geocache has amassed lots of praise, as geocachers say:
