Ring Quest XVII: The Three: Narya

The Rings of Power were the masterwork of the Elven-smiths of Eregion, headed by Celebrimbor. The impetus for their creation came from Sauron, who could still assume an appearance fair enough to deceive the Elves. Planning to use the rings to dominate the remaining Elves of Middle-earth, Sauron secretly forged the One Ring in the fires of Orodruin; however, when he put the ruling ring on his finger, the Elves were immediately aware of him and took their own rings off.

Furious, Sauron came against the Elves with open war and demanded that the Rings be given to him. Fortunately for the Elves, they were able to hide the greatest three, but Sauron recovered the other sixteen. These he then gave to mortals: seven to the Dwarves and nine to Men. The three that remained with the Elves were carefully hidden from Sauron. They were not created as weapons of war or as a means to dominate others; their purpose was to preserve the beautiful Elven domains where their wielders resided, and to aid in healing and resisting evil. However, they were still linked to the One Ring, and whoever wore it could, with effort, see the thoughts of those who wore the Three.

Narya, the Ring of Fire, set with a ruby, was originally worn by Gil-galad, then by Círdan, who finally gave it to Gandalf. It had the power to inspire others to resist tyranny, as well as (in common with the other Three Rings) hiding the wielder from remote observation (except by the wielder of the One) and giving resistance to the weariness of time. Its original wearer, Gil-galad, founded Lindon, the longest-standing Eldarin Kingdom in the history of Middle-earth, and the mightiest throughout the Second Age.

The lands of Lindon were said to be lush and green, with thick forests lining the foothills of the Blue Mountains. This cache is hidden in a lush green area as well, and will require a little effort to reach. Several parking options exist in addition to the suggested coordinates. It’s a pleasant walk from any of them until you get to the cache, where some bushwhacking is required. It’s probably best to make the final approach from seventy feet southwest of the cache, through the brush. You are looking for a camo'ed container near the ground. It has trade items, a log, and information you will need in order to find the final cache and retrieve your copy of the One Ring. The clues are in Tengwar, the Elvish alphabet. Remember to bring something to make notes!
