These three tips can make your next geocaching outing better
There’s a whole geocaching frontier out there, and as lands begin to reopen in some places, we’re eager to hit the trails. We know there are many physical and mental benefits of being outdoors—plus there are geocaches to be found—but safety is always the priority. Here are three suggestions to help you get outside and enjoy nature and geocaching responsibly.
Tip #1: Don’t hit that snooze alarm!
We love lazy weekend mornings as much as the next person, but hiking days are not the days to roll over and hit the snooze button. With social distancing recommended, it’s time to be mindful of when you hit the trails. The earlier you go, the fewer people, which is better for keeping muggles at bay and being able to enjoy the great outdoors. Try visiting trails on weekdays rather than weekends for an even quieter experience!
Tip #2: Remember your Tools of the Trade (TOTT)
There are several TOTT’s every geocacher always carries such as a pen and extra batteries or a phone charger, but these days you should add a few more items to your geocaching bag. Consider packing a mask in case you run into other geocachers along the way, and remember to hand sanitize after you’ve signed the logbook. View the rest of our tips for safe geocaching!
Tip #3: Do your research
It’s hard to know how to gear up if you don’t know the trail conditions. Look for websites and apps that offer trip reports from other hikers that can let you know of any trail hazards, such as trees down, or if the trail was really popular and busy! Check on Geocaching.com to see if there is useful trail information in the description of the geocaches, or if recent finders provided useful information or pictures. Remember to have a few destinations in mind in case your first choice is crowded when you arrive!
