Adventure Lab Spotlight: The Whimsical Sculptures Of Ken Nyberg
This month’s spotlight brings us to the tiny town of Vining, Minnesota, in the American Midwest. In the 2020 census, Vining registered a population of 62 people, but don’t be deceived by that number. This small town is home to a collection of large sculptures that make it well worth a visit. And lucky for you explorers, there is an Adventure, The Whimsical Sculptures Of Ken Nyberg, at the Nyberg Sculpture Park, that guides you through the artwork.
The Nyberg Sculpture Park highlights the work of sculptor Ken Nyberg, who originally had a career in construction and building grain elevators. In the 1980s, Nyberg began crafting sculptures out of scrap metal as a hobby, which eventually grew into a new career as an artist.
The non-sequential Adventure has Locations at five different sculptures in the park. Each sculpture gives explorers a feel for Nyberg’s sense of humor and creativity, with 12-foot sculptures of potted cactus plants and large animals sculpted from scrap metal.

One of the Adventure’s Locations is in front of a 10-foot-tall metal elephant with its trunk raised and one foot lifted, as if about to walk. Nyberg welded this sculpture together from hundreds of lawn mower blades.
If you have extra time after completing the Adventure, you can use the clues from the Adventure to find the bonus cache associated with it, and you can visit Nyberg’s studio which is a short drive from the park (and also has another geocache you can find.)
